Posts: 108 (02/09/09 21:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi all,what do you consider is the best way to play barbel i.e rod tip up in the air or low to the water? I fish on the Ribble,mainly at Ribchester where it can be quite snaggy close in due to the rocks placed as flood defences and the other day I lost 3 fish to hook pulls as I was keeping the tip high trying to keep them out of the rocks.They weren`t the biggest fish but they all count. I know each swim will present different problems,Im just looking for general ideas. Cheers James

What size hooks are you using ?, with the line being more vertical during the fight you obviously are pulling against less flesh, than if you were pulling laterally. I would try going up a hook size, that hopefully might cure your problem, as the hook turns hopefully it will catch more flesh. When i'm playing fish in weed i do exactly the same as you and keep the rod tip high, i can't say when the last time was i had a hook pull on my usual size 6's, but at the beggining of the season i dropped to size 8's to see if i could get a take, and promptly lost two in short order, small hooks are fine if you haven't got to pile on the pressure, or keep the rod high, went back to size 6's, and have had no trouble since. Im going tomorrow hopefully, so I`ll step up to a size 8 & see how I get on. Cheers

Posts: 8 (15/09/09 18:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The swims I fish hold some decent Chub aswell as Barbel.If I go down to a size 8 and shorter hair I have hooked Barbel and suffered hook pulls.Never had a hook pull on a size 6 and longer hair length.Therein lies the answer. I always play fish with the rod tip high and would never use barbless hooks,lifes hard enough as it is never mind hooks falling out after doing all the hard work and hooking the fish in the first place. Posts: 12 (14/10/09 12:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I used to have alot of problems with hook pulls and losing fish, with the majority of my sessions losing more fish than landing. I have now changed my hooks and use a very long hook length, keeping the rod tip as high as possible. It seems to have done the trick becuase I haven't had a hook pull since the change.

Posts: 48 (05/11/09 22:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	depends on the situation, but i find you get barbel in easier playing them with rod low using side strain pulling the fish in. i find when you have your rod high, the fish dive down more. up to the angler really and what they're confident in doing. it's like they panick less.
