Just to let you know that I have been out all last week and today watching and photographing
the 'devastating' Ranunculus weed cutting exercises on the Hampshire Avon SSSI/SAC/Ramsar/etc listed site from Ringwood to Burton by the Environment
Agency. This is because the Water Meadows are a bit wet for the time of year!
A 40% width of river cut was stated with a preferred 'one' boat channel through the middle, thus leaving 30% weed cover on each side of the river.
In my opinion, they have exceeded this, taking out 80%+ in some areas leaving no surface cover for fish, wildlife, water fowl
,etc, not to mention destroying the otters environment. Also the over efficient tank like weed cutting machines have been scraping and disturbing the riverbed
to a high extent, destroying macro invertebrates, newly laid fish eggs from barbel, chub and other species including the highly protected Lamprey, which some
are late spawning because of the faster flow and lower water temperatures this spring /summer.
To boot, the EA intended to complete the cut by July 1st, but have now decided that the level has not dropped enough
to satisfy the farmers along the banks of the Hampshire Avon in this area.
So, they intend to do it all again this week with another 75% cut and take out the Ranunculus infested gravel shallows and where of course the Bullhead, Salmon parr and surviving yearling coarse fish fry are sheltering and hiding up!
Watch this space.
Here today 1st July - Gone later Today!
Here last week - Gone last week! An EA 40% Ranunculus weed cut?
