Had a go yesterday for a few hours...
Only a load of chub for me! There were 5 other anglers there too! Saw 5-6 barbel in places I wouldnt expect but they were stupidly cagey!! Theres always next time! Cheers Adam |

Fished this morning for a few hours. Saw 2 or 3 barbel. It's really weedy in places at the moment, so quite difficult to place a bait. May have another go
later this week.

Has no one been recently? It seems really busy this year... There were 8 cars in the "car park" at Stanley last weekend, so I went elsewhere. Fished
the weekend before and caught a load of chub, a minnow, and my biggest ever dace. Also lost 3 barbel (bad day!). There were plenty of barbel to be seen though,
just nothing over about 5 or 6lb

Well, after an exodus of 6 years ( due to my daughter being born ), I am planning a trip to the Marden again! I used to visit the place at least once a week
from Bristol years ago, and back then you hardly saw a soul at there. I remember bumping into Trefor West out there once, so I thought it must be river for him
to be there! Reading your reports it sounds like its becoming quite popular, but the barbel are not so plentiful as they were some 6 years ago when I went,
when it wasn't uncommon to catch 6 per session up to late 9lbs. Where have they gone, or is it just a case that its fished too hard now, so the fish have
moved off or become very cagey?? Anyway, I thought I'd write to apologise to all fellow Marden anglers for my absence during the last 6 years, but
can't wait to get going again in the next few weeks, hope to share a brew with some of you!

Adam,
8 Cars !!!??? You sure there wasn't a match on !!!??? Only been twice this season, so I couldn't possibly comment on how it's fishing Marcus, you will indeed find that it's changed a little ! If you used to fish it a fair bit then we may well have crossed paths in the past !

Nah Mate,
Not been in long from work ! Just taking in the Cricket highlights and feeling strangely decadent having a lager at this time of the morning ! |

It may have been a match, didnt stick around to check lol
Tempted to go have a look today although I'm addicted to catching Pike on the fly at the moment... The numbers of bigger barbel (7lb+) seems to have diminished since I first fished it, whether its because they have gone downstream, they're "wising up" or just getting better at hiding, I just dont know! Cheers Adam |

Adam,
I'm afarid that I just think their time has gone ! Those bigger fish were probably much older, I honestly believe that it will be some time before The Marden is capable of producing fish of that class again ! Paul M. |

Well then that would be very sad indeed! There are loads of small fish in there though so theres still good reason to fish it

It was definitely Trefor West, he was taking a "student" out for lessons, he even gave me what paste he had left once he was going. He caught more
than me not surprisingly!! So, being honest, am I better starting back on the Bristol Avon for a better chance to connect with the old barbus barbus???

If your willing to spend a little time looking for them on the marden, I'd say your almost certain to connect with one! Landing it is another matter
though, as I found last week
Im going to go and have a dabble later myself I think! Cheers Adam |

Best of luck Adam, I'll await to read of your success stories, or not!! I take it I can still get a river permit from the tackle shop in Chippenham?? I
assume I can't get one from anywhere in Bristol?

Maybe the "good old days" are not too far away! Managed 4 barbel today in about 3 hours... Best going at least 7lb. Also heard of some bigger
captures and BIGGER fish seen from a reliable bloke I see down there every now and then, so maybe they still are in there! Dont know what the chub were doing
but they definately wernt feeding! (not that im complaining)
Marcus, yeah Premier Angling or TK tackle in Calne are the only places I've ever gotten my tickets from, I dont think Veals or Bristol Angling Centre do them. Best of luck if you go! :) Cheers Adam |

Adam,
I hope you are right ! But I would take the rumours of much bigger fish with a pinch of salt ! They are not there ! I'm guessing your source is a chap I see there fairly often, if so, then he does spend a fair amount of time there........ Like all rivers The Marden goes in cycles ! Ask yourself how many 3-4lb fish did you catch 2-3 years ago ? Not many I'd wager ! I've not had as many small fish from there as I've had over the last couple of years for some time ! Going back 10+ years a 7 was average ! Now I'd say that a 4-5 is ! A new year class is flourishing no doubt, but I honestly feel that the numbers of 6-10lb fish are much lower than 5 years ago ! I hope i'm wrong. Only time will tell ! Good luck to you all ! Paul M.... |

Your probably right Paul! Exciting years ahead no doubt when these 4-5lbers get bigger :P
