Marston and North Oxford stretches of the river are within the ring road from above the Marston ferry link road down to university parks...above the A40
it'll be either AOAA or pressumably free water unless the farmer doesnt want you fishing it, but that's unlikely.

Cheers for the help beany, I guess that if there is not a notice on the bank at start of stretch or entrance to the field my usual principle applies i.e fish
at will not causing a nuisance and leave willingly if asked to do so!!!!!!!!!!!

Your very brave going on that stretch of the river.... what you after? I know the stretch very well upto Islip, lovely looking stretch where you will perhaps
be the only angler fishing it. On one of my last sessions I managed to catch a snapper turtle next to the A40 bridge!
Good luck and I mean it as that will be some seriously tough fishing, let me know if your going up there I'll try n give you as much advice as I can. I spent 3 years fishing it all from scratch with no advice. To be honest I actually watched more fish than I caught! Cheers Jason |

I am mainly after the big chub that are supposed to reside there????????
Also I am led to believe there are a few big barbel and carp. Nothing like a challenge so long as it is possible to reap some rewards if you persist. Rightly or wrongly I think the whole river is getting a bit over challenging for everything except maybe bream (oh and not forgetting crays). 8lb bream or 6lb chub no competition really the least slimy one will always be preferred. |

During the summer it's pretty much a still water, carp and bream are easy to be spotted but they are along walk away up on the bends above the wires....have a look on google earth you'll spot where I'm on about... I dug a peg out on the high bank 6 years ago, it should still be there. the peg directly above the bridge always seems to hold a few carp and tench in the summer and its one of the few areas where the roach shoal up..along with the snapper turtles! Barbel, I would say it would be amazing if you caught one from that area as it's very hard work catching them from the best areas on the river. Chub, I have caught very few around there but I used to fish it more in the summer and autum and in the past (long time ago) anglers used to go up there regularly for big chub, typically if your after them your best to fish in the winter and spring. You will have to face the fact you will be fishing the most cray fish infested stretches of river you will ever come across. But go up there and have a look at the bends above the wires when it's hot...if you see the bream shoal that lives up there and the carp that look 20-30lb mooching around without a care in the world it'll make you think what else is up there....then if you try to fish it??......only then will you realise how that bit of river will mess with your head! Good luck Jason |

It definitely sounds an intriguing bit of water where a look would be very worthwhile.
Is that a stream running into the river near to end of second field or just a stagnant ditch? I personally don't think anywhere could out do Somerton with regards to the crayfish. A friend of mine who regularly traps the bu**ers had just over 200 in under an hour using 4 net traps. I think any more and you wouldn't be able to see a river bed (perhaps that why the fish can't find the gravel runs to spawn rather than it being crays eating their eggs)????????????????? Cheers for your help though and I think you might be right about the bends being a bit of a trek must be a mile ish. Still on a positive new season is only 1 week away and some more rain is allegedly coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All that said this has got to be the season to catch my first double figure barbel and it really would be most rewarding if it came from the Cherwell.

Where are the wires and bends on the stretch . How far down from islip are they.

Going by google earth it is at the end of second going through bottom corner of third into start of the forth field from the A40. The first one is quite a
narrow one. Then the second one is fairly long and rectangular. Its probably 1000 metres in a straight line from the road bridge at least six fields down
stream from Islip. The power cables go right over the corner of third and forth fields and the middle of bends.
Its roughly 2000 metres following the course of the river and about 1500 metres as a crow flies from Islip.

The easiest way to get to above the wires is from Cuttselowe Park car park, walking down the pitch n put course down to the end across the ditch then across
two fields to the peg on the inside of the bend.. where I dug it out. There is a name for the swim as it was popular years ago, I'll try and find out what
it was called.
