Hi all,
I'm not after real healthy pointers on this post but as I'm working in the Banbury area a couple of days a week until the latter part of the year, I wondered whether someone would be so kind as to recommend which club book to go after. Ideally, I don't want to travel too far from Banbury but am open to suggestions .... of an angling nature! Cheers in anticipation! Steve |

Banbury Clubs | ||

Not many options Steve. If you're after Barbel then the obvious choices are Banbury DAA at £30 stretches are all about 20-30 minutes south of Banbury -
small barbel populations at Somerton, Shipton, Long Meadow. Oxford DAA is another option - no night fishing and again 20-30 minutes south of Banbury -
Northbrook and Kirtlington - you'll need to join an affiliated club - Kidlington (c. £20) is probably the best bet as they also have a couple of their own
stretches at Thrupp and at Kidlington with a few barbel. There are other small village clubs but hard to get in to and with no known form (to me anyway) for
Barbel and also plenty of free stretches (as far as I know) in the Banbury area. Rumours of possible Barbel in Cropredy and south Banbury areas - might be
worth putting your stout yorkshire boots and having a long leisurely walk along the banks sometime - when the river recedes and clears a bit. pm me your
mobile if you want a longer chat.

Many thanks for the information. I'll sit down with a map and take a look at some of those areas. I've been staying South of Banbury and so the locations may be just what I'm after. If the weather's OK on Tuesday, I might get my Raichle's out and take that wander as you suggest! I got soaked walking the "overgrown" Oxfordshire Canal this week but that's life! I'll get back to once I've done a reckie on areas where I can get to for an hour or two after work. Cheers Steve |

I've been studying the map today - do you know the access points (& where to park) for Somerton & Kirtlington. It's not immediately obvious from the OS maps. Cheers! Steve |

Steve,
For Somerton you park by the river bridge just west of the village. From here you can go two fields downstream (about 1.5 miles) on the left bank (looking downstream) or upstream on both banks for a few fields (not sure how many). For kirtlington area the two options are Northbrook hamlet (about 1-2 miles north of Kirtlington) and Pigeon Lock - there is a road/gravel track that runs down from Kirtlington village green in a southwesterly direction - park before the canal bridge and find the river. I'll pm you my mobile number - I'm out walking the banks tomorrow evening if your free. Cheers Graham

Graham,
I got out pretty late last night and despite it being a bit of a wild night weather wise, I did manage a 3lb chub on my first trip in the Somerton area. You have an interesting time with the signals down here don't you! I saw a chap who'd got about a dozen of the beasties! I'm back down in a couple of weeks and hope to get out earlier and to the stretch you kindly showed me around. Cheers Steve |

Morning All , so far 2 sessions on the Cherwell at Shipton ( 1 evening , 1 morning ) has only resulted in 6 chub ! Biggest 4.12 Fishing buddy lost a Barbel
last week after seeing the fish. Will be down again later this week. Hope you are having better luck. Diggley

Nice to hear from you again Diggers - from your brief appearances on the board I guess you must migrate for most of the year
Not been down the Cherwell yet - saving it up for a rainy day. Good to hear your mate connected with a Barbel - at least they're in the area and feeding - any size? Well done Steve on your chub - plenty more where that one came from
usually a bit bigger though
Might see you down the river next Wednesday.
Cheers

Somerton is one of the worst places on the Cherwell for crays. They even take bread in winter there! It does have some very big chub as well and the odd barbel
but never as many as rumour would suggest. In fact i have caught 2 there in 20 years which, although I haven't spent all those 20 years pursuing Somerton
barbel, would suggest they are elusive to say the least. Having put in many rod hours looking for them I can only conclude they are either nomadic or simply
not there in any numbers to make a campaign viable. But good luck to anyone who wants to put the effort in as it's just the sort of place to hold a big
fish. And as I said, there are also some excellent chub to be caught at Somerton.
The big fish no longer seem to be in residence at Shipton. Otters have been blamed and this is certainly likely. 15 or so years ago it was a phenomenal stretch for barbel with 5 or 6 resident doubles. Even when word got out and the pressure increased the fishing was still excellent so I don't think angling pressure is responsible for this stretch being a shadow of it's former self. It was suggested the group may have dispersed or dropped down to Thrupp but the Thrupp and Kidlington areas are no longer as good as they once were either. Also some carcasses of big barbel were reputedly found in the Kidlington area and that is otters, no question. Mink, never. It was suggested that a mink had killed The Traveller on the Ouse! A mink drag out a 20 pound barbel!! Must have had a crane handy. Maybe the Cherwell will one day return to it's former status as an excellent, if very hard barbel river but it will probably take a good few years and a good few less otters. |

I fish mainly on the GX stretch at Kidlington and regularly walk their 2.5 mile stretch. I have seen no evidence of otters but over the years many mink.
Certainly no large fish kills are evident on our stretch which if otters where present I would expect..
I agree though something has happened as the fish are far fewer. Ive stopped counting the blanks as its become depressing!!! |

Shipton | ||

I have seen at least one double at Shipton in the last three years and know of a sighting of 2 doubles in a shoal in the last 18 months. There are places for
the fish to hide out and I suspect angling pressure is part of the issue. Also, having fished it a lot over the last 4 years i have never seen any signs of
otters - I have seen a mink a couple of years ago. The thing about the Cherwell is that there are plenty of spots that rarely if ever see a rod - Barbel could
be living it up in many areas a mile or so from the nearest road and would probably never be spotted. If the river ever gets properly clear for a while it
would be worth spending a few hours walking the banks armed with polaroids. The otter kill was on the Kidlington AS stretch at Kidlington - I assume it was
the resident population by the garages. Anyone fish the Cherwell closer to Banbury - I have heard rumours of barbel - and some were stocked between Banbury
and Cropredy a few years ago - they could well be a good size now if they have found anywhere not silted up to make their homes.
Cheers

Hi Graham,
Certainly mink on the stretch at Shipton as I saw them there this week! No whiskers though ..... yet! The water was a bit coloured and not really in a good state for fish spotting sadly! Steve |

Come on Steve , you don't need to see them ! Use your barbel locating skills honed on the usually mucky Yorkshire rivers that you fish
