Posts: 75 (08/05/08 21:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Just thought I'd start this thread because I come across many examples in my everyday life too many to mention really and I will add them as I remember them. Others please do likewise. Yesterday I had to take a CSCS test which is a basic requirement by the government to show that you are not a complete moron.If you have not passed this test you are not allowed on any construction site and is thereofore a Legal requirement that you have it by any employer.The cost of this test including the manual you must buy but not including any travel or lost work costs is about£50.I tried to arrange a test 21st may but the earliest appointment I could get was yesterday(nearly3Weeks),and that was by going to a second (further away ) destination.When I arrived I was amazed to find that I was the only person taking the exam out of a possible 8.There were 3 members of staff on duty.What a complete waste of resourses!Words fail me.I passed the test in about 10 mins but their camera didn't work so I must produce my own photo.Just about sums up this shower don't you think?

Posts: 7860 (10/05/08 06:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Paul, you would be surprised how many are unaware of dangers ect, not sure exactly what CSCS is as i am not in the building trade but if its HASA connectted then beleive me some olk NEED to be warned of putting their hands in boiling water ect! silly as it seems some folk just dont see or recognise real danger!, keep safe to enoy yer fishing mate....j.w

CSCS is a certficate of competence,....basically a certificate giving your qualifications..also to show you understand certain health and safety issues.. It`s not a legal requirement though,...although many major housebuilders etc. ask for it before entering site.. It`s the same old story,..if it suits them they`ll ask for it,...if they are short on labour they will turn a blind eye... Glad to see my CITB contributions aren`t being wasted though!..

Posts: 7866 (11/05/08 01:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Brendan, the GLA (gangmasters licensing authority) insists that and GLA licence holder gives proper Health and safety training to their work force, the penalties for not keeping proper records and updates is very harsh mate, anyone who contracts work out to self employed or employed must register and comply, non-conforming carries a long prison sentence....j.w

There is no obligation you to buy the manual your empolyer should get one for you (unless you are self employed). Having said that anybody with half a brian will pass the basic CSCS test without looking at the sample questions. The CSCS tests are usually undertaken at driving thoery test centres not dedeicated CSCS centres. The CSCS body is independant but has been adopted by many construction companies, principle contractors and clients as a meaure of competence for workers on site (and also to cover their arse if an accident happens on site). One of the main reasons it was brought in was the number of foreign workers just appearing on construction sites with liitle or no safety awareness putting others and themselves at risk. What one understands is only half true. What one does not understand is the full truth.

Posts: 77 (11/05/08 13:26) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The point I was Trying to make was that it took 3 weeks to get a test in a centre that's running at 12% capacity and there were 3 times as many staff on duty as necessary. By government I mean Official body's in general. This week it was revealed that British Airside workers are subject to stringent CRB checks(quite rightly IMO) but foreign born workers are not,because it takes too long(what's the rush?) and is a bit complicated. Government ministers have known about this for 5 years.

However if you think the system is wrong why not try and do something about it and become active in politics............But don't expect to become prime minister overnight. To get an insight into politics and decision making in a democracy you could start with putting yourself forward as a governor of your local school or if an opportunity comes along you could stand as a candidate for your parish council, alternatively you could look into becoming a charity trustee or even get involved with the political side of your local angling club? Once you start to get involved you might just begin to understand that things are not always as simple and straight forward as the layman would like to make them.
