Happily, yesterday's opening day foray turned out to be a case of triumph over disaster
The disaster obviously coming in the universally unwelcome "monsoons" early on in the week which forced me to hastily re-think my previous choice of venue (a quiet little-known middle stretch near Burton) which would have been totally unfishable. I opted for a lower-river venue nr Muskham, where I gambled on the levels being more acceptable (as was the case last winter) and being on a large inside bend which, could well produce results. Amazingly enough, not only was the stretch reasonably clear of other anglers, particularly as I had only got there at 4.00pm, but my favourite swim (in-between two occupied ones) was free Nothing happened for about 7 hours from 4.30pm til 11.40 I had originally planned to leave at 12.30, but I hated to start on a downer, so I stayed on thinking that where there was (eventually) one barbel there might be another and, sure enough, as I was starting to pack odd items away(about 12.40) my other rod was yanked around and a bristling 7lb 12 oz specimen was banked (my favourite Elips pellets this time) Anyway, despite my initial misgivings during the week about conditions, I am on the scoresheet from "Day One", so I hope that this is the pattern for a while now Regards to all Roger |
