Which hooklink braid? |
Lead | |
|
I'm currently using Drennan Microbraid & Sinkbraid for my hooklinks & while I'm reasonably happy with them is there anything better out there?
I'm talking uncoated braid..I use a combi rig so my braid is as short as possible..

do we assume you are using a stiff 'boom' section steve ?
if not , amnesia is a good reliable choice ... stu |

right I'm not sure if you can't beat a good old mono tbh & I may just be complicating things..I've never used Amnesia, is it good ? &
what's the dia. on the 15 lb BS..I sometimes worry I may have too many knots in my rigs..

What's been your problem with the knotless knot on fluorocarbon Steve? Just curious to know.....

Hi Julian, it's just it ( the knotless knot) never seems tight, when the line tightens & slackens it opens up & then tightens down..Probably it
doesn't do any harm, enough people use it, but some advocate the use of superglue which seems a bit scary..I've tried tying fluoro direct to the hook
using a grinner & putting on a braid hair but I can't get it right..I also like the movement braid gives the bait especially when I'm using a
balanced hookbait..

couldnt tell you the dia of the amnesia steve , not really used it since the coated braids came on the scene , but its very robust
have you not considered mantis or snakebite etc ? no need for any joining knots or anything like that to be honest with you , i would guess 80% of the time i just use plain old berkley big game 15lb , dont think it does me any harm main reason i now use it as i lost a good un , a very good on 10lb flouro , when it touched a rocky snag |

Steve, Re combi rig, if you're joining the braid direct to the mono (Albright knot?), then I find that sinkbraid has a habit of fraying around the join.
When tying this rig I much prefer a braid with a tighter weave i.e. powerpro, or as daft as it sounds the inner braid from stealthskin or coretex.

Thanks for explaining that mate. To be fair I am yet to have a problem like this and with last season for me seeing the fewest lost fish for quite a few seasons I can only say that I'm having no problems all round. I've tried attaching the hook myself using a grinner but I can't get the hair right, I only seem to get it right when I use the knotless knot.

Julian it's just with fluoro been so stiff it feels like the knot never closes especially with the thicker diameter, but better anglers than me use it with
no probs, I've got some Wychwood trout leader fluoro in 10 lb which seems excellent but that could be because it's a fairly low BS & dia.
Twitcher thanks for the advice regarding knots but I've been using a 6mm ESP oval rig ring to join my braid to fluoro, I cover this with a little rig putty. Just got some Silkworm delivered but I'm not sure about the colour Although when conditions allow I use Strip Teaze, I know I'm probably complicating things but to me it's part of the enjoyment of Barbel angling.. |

Steve, have a good look at the Korda poly coated stuff, comes in weed green or gravel brown, very soft coating, feels great, peels easy and really blends in, 1
or 2 small mouse dropping sized heavy metal will hold it on bottom nicely,
personally efore this came out i usually used the sink braid as a complete hooklink and never had any problems but this new korda stuff is very good, their wide gape hooks seem good gear too...j.w |
