I was hoping someone on here could give me some tips as I have only ever sea fished the UK from a boat in the channel once before. I intend using a 2.75 carp rod, 12 lb (possibly 15lb) line with 3-4oz breakaway leads and some bait or feathers, and probably a paternoster type set up, but while I can see jigging feathers working from a boat, wasn't sure what was the thing to try from the beach. I would also consider spinning. I realise a my gear is not the ideal, but feel I should give it a go. If you can provide some advice or point me to some web sites that can help I would be grateful. Posts: 124 (21/04/08 13:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Chris, I have a couple of tides each year feathering for mackeral on the North Norfolk coast. If the weather is right (hot and windless) an evening tide can be quite productive in July and August. It is very much a hit and miss affair though but it makes for a cracking evening's exercise as the sun sets. I use 2.75 carp rods with big pit reels, 12 lb line and 4oz leads. You will probably find you will be able to outcast most of the guys using beach fishing gear.I just don't know about May. Simon

Agree with Simon, if you are using a biggish fixed spool and carp rod you'll get a fair distance. The only caveat I would state here Chris is the time of the year. A warm spring and the first of the mackerel should be in but it hasn't been that warm of late so it could be a tadge early for them.... Ian PS - Hope you got your Txi's Windsor Barbel Catchers

Usually with me it's bl***y dogfish. You really need some local knowledge, try the nearest tackle shop for the best bait/method. Bill

I don't know the area myself. Look for sandy areas or estuaries and use as light a ledger as you can with a 4 or 2 hook and bits of mussel, squid, crab or worms.

Posts: 1119 (21/04/08 22:11) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Fishing out of Bradwell, on the Blackwater, we have been feathering for mackerel and bass since the start of April when offshore enough to be in clearish water and have not yet come across any of the former - we leave the rod alone with the lead just off the bottom and use the rocking of the boat to provide the motion on the feathers. They'll definitely be about by the end of May in my area from a boat but I'm not sure about the location you mention and from the shore. I'd always associated shore based mackerel fishing to be something you do from the rocks and/or where there is deep water close in, especially with feathers - but I might be wrong and/or your venue may fit the bill. Bass on the other hand are entirely different and can be caught "1 foot offshore" in ridiculously shallow water around my neck of the woods. If it was a "normal" looking beach you'll be fishing from then as suggested I'd use baits that give you the best chance of covering as many bases as possible to find out what might be there - so lug, squid and perhaps strips of mackerel. Not sure I've helped, sorry. ATB Mike Edit: Just checked and it looks like mackerel should be about in the general area you mention by early / mid May. Any specific comments about feathers working from the beach? If not I will try with lugs and see what happens. Interesting now someone mentioned bass. I dearly want to catch one as I love eating them -so any tips or comments about the likehood would be most welcome. Presume all the gear should be dowsed in fresh water after use? Ian Was chatting to Ed last Saturday about a fluff session and bass fishing did come up. I know you go once a year? any tips for finding a boat or being able to make up the numbers? The TXis turned into a new TV but will buy shortly once the piggy bank has recovered. I am also considering the new cheapies from TFG (X-sense £150)and Ron Thompson - Prologic Sensora £130) both have 3 x alarms and receiver. As I only need them a couple of times a year when after cats, the expense of the Delkims is a little hard to justify bar they will hold their value and last a lifetime. BTW Kev Whitcombe had a monster cat yesterday or today I think, look out for his post if he chooses to share. If it helps anyone the Force 8s are apparently a little fragile with the receiver ariel particularly prone to breaking, and despite the ad blurb are not 100% weatherproof. Posts: 431 (22/04/08 19:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Chris, feathering will definately work from the beach, in shallow water(like Pevensey), you will need a high tide either dawn or dusk, and a calm sea. Keep your eyes open, they will often show as they chase sandeels to the surface, they move up and down the beaches very quickly, so move to showing fish, and keep following them untill you have caught enough. If you want bass, the better fish tend to be caught in darkness, normally with a rough sea, and can be very close in, just in the gutter at the base of the shingle. Fresh mackerel, either the head& guts, or a whole fillet is a really good bait, use big hooks, 4/0+, another good early bait is either a big peeler crab, or a soft backed one, watch out for stray smoothhounds with crabs, they will pull your rod in, just like barbel, and are serious fun, especially a big one!!!
