Bait bands -problems |
Lead | |
|
For several seasons now I have been using bait bands instead of hair rigs . Initially I had problems with them breaking for no apparent reason , this problem then stopped , again for no apparent reason ,and I have had not experienced the phenomena since . I have been using 'STONFO' bands , size 2 which according to the packet will accomodate pellets from 16-25mm , I usually use 14mm pellets so I don't think I am overstretching them as it were . One of my fishing companions has recently experienced similar problems , other anglers that I know have abandoned using them as their confidence in the bands had gone . There is nothing worse than worrying all the time , i.e has the band broken and am I fishing with no bait and a broken band ? I have experimented by putting the bands under extreme load , they are certainly durable enough and its suprising how much force it takes to break them . However try a ' used ' band and they will snap under minimal load
Any ideas ? |

Yes , that is an alternative , however what I was trying to get at is why these bands break , and if anyone had experienced similar problems , thanks for the tip . I have used hair rigs , just got bored drilling the pellets .

Full marks Dazza, Yep, hair rig them.
I've experienced some poor band quality, especially the thin latex types. Reckon that some bands become weak after exposure to oil.........just my experience but lots of oil in pellets. They are valuable in some situations but still prefer to hair rig. My mate swears by (not at) the lasso type of hair rig arrangement. Cheers Bob |

Hair rig the bands.... use a very short hair / small loop and fold the bands back through themselves. They're very quick to replace if they then break

If anybody is having problems drilling pellets try using the new ESP bait drill and baiting needle set. Both tools are very thin (less than 1mm) and drill thorugh pellets very easily without breaking them.

i have had no problem with the 6.5mm gardner bands but dont have them close to oily pellets before using them.drennan do a brown band to match the colour of the pellet.the alternative is hair rigging.if you use the hangmans noose you dont need to drill the pellets.a 4 turn grinner and tie a small knot in the end to loosen the knot when changing the bait.i have caught using this method but when the pellet goes soft it will fall out of the knot sometimes.the band will close round it and thats why i use it.hope this is useful.

Mike, Sorry if I came across as being flippant, but hair rig is the best method, simple as! You could glue your pellets to the hair...this has two main advantages over drilling. First, you won't have to bugger about drilling them. Second, the main advantage is...they won't breakdown as quickly in the water. Bobby is correct, bands are affected by the oil content of the pellets. Bait bands are ok for pole fishing on still water (which they were designed for) and mixers for fishing on the top. But IMO they are not upto the job for general river fishing. Not 100% sure? But think the Lasso method, mentioned by Bob, is method I have used, but mostly for attaching boillie and pop-ups on still water. Take your length of hooklink material. Tie a 4-5 turn Grinner knot around your chosen size of pellet at one end of the hooklength. Attach this knotless knot style to your hook, leaving small gap between bait and bend of hook. Attach swivel at other end. This grinner knot will slide open (Lasso style) and you can re-attach a new bait and close the Lasso again! Dazza. |

Hi All,
bear in mind that the lassoo method is only really effective when using a nylon hair, because the slight stretch of the nylon will grip the bait more, even if the bait dissolves. regards, Butdim |

Bob,
I agree with your mate, lassoo hair does away with drilling and messing about with glue. The pellets last longer, are toally secure and easy to replace. Large pellets and multiple pellet presentations are easly cared for as well so give it a go, I guarantee you will not change back. Love Tinca |
