Lots of people eat lamprey, not so much in Britain now but they are still considered a delicacy in many countries.
Barbel certainly eat the immature lamprey that burrow into the silt as do the chub. I used lamprey flavour in my feeder mix and lamprey paste on the hook to catch an 11.10 a couple of days ago. |

Henry 1st famously died after eating too many lampreys, so it's perhaps as well that they've gone out of favour.

Apparently the Lamprey are caught 'wild' not farmed. So are we damaging our own environment in the pursuit of excellance? I noticed this mentioned on fishing magic. There is some good footage of lamprey feeding. Worth a watch.......

I have used small brook lamprey(4-6 inches) a few years back on the Teme & caught barbel & chub on them. They stay alive for hours when hooked & the bites from barbel were instant & ferocious, the chub seem to nibble away a lot at them but they still stay alive.

Barbel love lampreys but they are difficult to find and I will not use live bait. There was a king who died of eating a surfeit of lampreys but I think he was a gourmand rather than a gourmet

No need to go out smacking Lamprey on the head as once they have spawned.............they die

So, there once was a king that loved Lamprey,
It would often fill his belly quite amply. But the fish went to his head, And he ended up dead. So the fish stocks are better, substantially. |
