I know very little about fishing terminology but am OK in a hands on situation, so whats the best way to learn? Talking to others, books, just doing it? I am going to fish the method on the Kennet as I am comftorable doing this from my time Carp fishing a few years back, but I'd love to have the knowledge to be able to pick swims, try many different methods to suit different situations etc.. A bit like the matrix where they just load information into your head...

Most will be helpful as long as you are not making a nuisance of yourself......the knowledge gained through observation can be worth 20 or more blind fishing trips Darren.

Posts: 308 (07/08/07 10:28) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi matey, anglers instinct plays a good part of it. get to now your species what it likes ,where it feeds, where it likes to get cover ect. its a learning curve but once you find them and present a bait to them its not rocket science. youll soon get a feel for the river. bfw is the best source of knowledge on barbel fishing. loads of knowledgeable chaps who have been doing it for centuries can help you out when you get stuck, be prepared, you have to do a bit of work and the odd blank aswell. but perseverance will always pay off. also most importantly, be aware at this time off year barbel need recovering after being caught. read up on fish care and safe rigs before attempting catching them. eric

I'm sure they could show you alot of things in a day that would take a few years of trial and error by yourself. Why not mail Graham Elliott as i'm sure he guides on the river you mention

There are many good books out there that will increase your knowledge. Barbel Rivers and Captures- www.crowood.com This will give you a pretty good insight into Modern Barbel Fishing. Use your instincts to find Barbel, gravel patches, rafts of debris, clear channels in the weed, the crease line on two different flows, its juast water craft. As a carper, you may well have leaded around a swim, do the same with Barbel Rivers. If you find you enjoy Barbel fishing you can go onto, touch legering, upstream feeder fishing, rolling meat, maggot madness etc etc Who knows, you might enjoy using a Centre Pin, but don't let this lot fool you into thinking you have to learn the Wallis Cast to get the best out of a Pin ? Take your time and enjoy developing your experience, at your age youve got plenty of time and you will pick up plenty of tips on this site. If you're going to be fishing the Kennet, learn how to trundle meat as it is by far one of the most reliable methods of putting lots of kennet barbel on the bank. A good friend of mine is a master on the kennet and has taken upwards of 300 barbel in a season on this method including some big fish. Like others have said, read as much barbel literature as you can, but dont forget to keep yourself in check and remember that its important to be happy with your fishing, so dont set yourself difficult targets until you have some experience. Posts: 842 (07/08/07 20:40) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Olly, all good advice, do speak to as many anglers as you can, some will offer nothing, just like carpers, but you will probably be surprised how much info the majority will offer! There are so many different tactics,baits etc, all have there day, but talk, read, observe and above all be prepared to dare to be different! On a cautionary note, do be aware that the kennet is heaving with signal crayfish(very nice stir fried), baits left to fish for themselves may well disappear, leaving just a bare hook, not the best barbel catching method! peter

It seems to me you're just starting out, Barbel fishing is very high profile at the moment, and very much the in thing in fishing along with Carp, i think it would be a great shame if you didn't explore the wealth of fishing out there to be had, should only take you say.... 10 to 15 years but it's true !! along the way you'll learn a lot, and whilst your doing it, if there's a specialist or specimen angler in you you'll find yourself starting to lean toward that type of fishing, single species specialist or multi species specimen, maybe barbel maybe not, but whatever you end up doing you'll be the better, angler for all the knowledge you've gained on the way, and there will be times when you get a bit fed up with your normal fishing and just as easily turn to another, that said all of the advice you've had here will stand you in good stead whether it's fishing in general or just Barbel , i'll leave you with this thought - if you're not having fun you're doing something wrong !! Books can offer a range of good hints and tips, but you must bear in mind that unless the author has extensive knowledge of the venue that you are targeting, some of the tactics may not be effective. This isn't a slur on the authors, they write about what they know best which is as it should be. Over and above this, you may find that some of the tactics used simply don't suit you. Again, no fault of the author. There is no rhyme or reason to it either, and not being able to catch on a certain method or technique doesn't make you a bad angler. Play to your strengths, aim to learn something new each trip, and enjoy it.
