Hi Nigel,
you're surely not suggesting that the Crouch is a "starter" centrepin! IMO it's among the best you can get...it just happens to be bargain priced compared to some of the rip off stuff around. regards, Butdim |

I have a Aerodex, no problems with it. It's miles better than my Shakspear Golden Eagle which is horible.

All very well this advice to look for Speedias and stuff at car boot sales or on ebay, but if you want to get a c'pin and you have a budget of £100 tops, then go for an Okuma Aventa Pro for £70-80, else you'll wait around for a bargain that may never materialise.
I use and prefer Aerials myself, but have an Okuma also and it's very good for the price. I know someone with two TFG c'pins (for barbel) and he reckons there worth having (otherwise he wouldn't have bought a second one paul4 ps. My post was cut/pasted from a previous c'pin thread recently on the boards |

Hi butdim
Why go for a cheaper pin when you can buy a good one like the FRED CROUCH MATCH AERIAL CENTREPIN at a great price. Like you say why get ripped off I love it and it will last you a life time and why buy a starter pin like it and then spend more money to get a better one. Tight Lines and Happy Barbel Fishing. rant-thang about an Aventa Pro ball-bearing jobbie, the bronze one, available even on Ebay (which They shouldn't look at, cos the smart-tackle sharks are stalking it for stuff that people like Them shouldn't even get to know about, or they might get ideas above their Angling Station...), at rather less than retail price...?"
The Aventa, it is then. You can faff about later for Airhead Aerials etc, nice as some of them can be (though others are most distinctly not). Ho hum. Swim heavily baited with some brilliant non-standard stuff, two days running. D Day tomorrow. Bed. |

Speedias | ||

I have just checked Bonham's recent tackle auction results to learn that SIX SPEEDIAS went for £129. Some cheeky monkey is going to do rather well out of that. I was rather keen on a tin worm box that one could attach to a belt but did not make a bid and Bonham's site does not record whether it was sold.
But to get a Speedia for just over six pounds was an amazing bargain. |

Maths | ||

Hi Hugo,
not sure about your maths! wouldn't say it was "cheeky" placing a winning bid at an auction...what I call "cheeky" is when a dealer offers a "naive" person a pittance for a valuable centrepin!!! regards, Butdim |

Thanks for the input fellas got my eye on one or two.
One question sorry if it sounds silly but I'm cack handed and reel in with my right hand and hold the rod with my left, does this make a difference with centrepins or do you just turn them around ? Thanks, Rams. |

when it comes to centrepin- and fly-fishing. If the reel doesn't haven't a fixed lineguard (my centrepins have no lineguard, fixed or removable) then just fish it "our way".

So Paul the burning question is, what make are your centrepins?
Dont want to make a mistake when buying one. Rams. |

Centrepins | ||

Old: Speedias and Aerials in various diameters (mostly 4in.) and drum widths, plus a Trudex (without a lineguard).
New: An Okuma Aventa Pro (freelining) and a Sheffield (float only), plus a "girlfriends taken in part payment", Chris Lythe Aerial on the way. |

Re: Centrepins | ||

To be honest I'm looking at the Okuma due to not being too expensive for my 1st centrepin and not knowing wether or not i'll get on with one or not.
Okuma Aventa Pro it is then. Cheers, Rams. |

Fair choice for a start, you can always get a nice one later.

"One question sorry if it sounds silly but I'm cack handed and reel in with my right hand and hold the rod with my left, does this make a difference with centrepins or do you just turn them around ?" quote. I would say you are very lucky. Many old centrepins are set for right hand wind. It seems this was the fishing style back in the day. I have a few old reels set at right hand wind, they can be changed over, but its a case of do you want to tamper with it? I regulary use an old 4inch narrow Popular for trotting, but the ratchet is so so loud. With the new pins, its just a case of loading your line for a lefty. No problems. Good luck, Michael. |

Rams
It isn't just a case of using a reel as a lefty, but the likelyhood of it causing you a problem is minimal. On an aerial the ratchet pawl is set to give different resistance with line going 'in' as opposed to 'out', you could change it around but probably not worth it. Then there is the type and positioning of the ratchet control; if a lever it is likely to be on the top of the reel's rim, but as a lefty it would be on the bottom; if a knob it might be in a less convenient position for a lefty. I can use mine either way and can say to you, don't worry paul4 |
