sea anglers routinely use quick change hooklengths (which are known as snoods).
they use a snood clip (not surprisingly), which are available from all sea tackle shops and are not huge. you simply tie the hookength to the clip, which then attaches to a swivel (ideally) or at a push to a line loop.
it occurred to me that there is a similar product used in fly fishing that is smaller (less obtrusive), but is used for attaching flies to the hooklength (tippet). they come in 3 sizes, and whilst the smallest might be a bit lightweight, the 'large' (still small) size might be handy for made-up hookengths, when you want to change bait but need a different hook/hair set-up to do it.
I used the sea version on sunday night, and it was a successful trial from my point of view, in that I was able to swap rigs back and forth quickly without compromising a perfectly good tied hooklength by cutting and shortening.
these clips are cheap (couple of quid or less for 10) and reliable - can't see a fish straightening one, I landed a double figure bass on one of these, and the fight was 15 minutes in breaking surf (i'm talking about the sea snood clips).
