Biggest seen? If it's not been `on the scales' then it's nothing but a guess..
I think you've mentioned before that Dick Walker reported seeing 20lb plus Barbel in the Avon? Tell me this - what was the biggest, verified Barbel he'd personally witnessed - 18lb, 19lb? Thought not! As I said, pure speculation.. Declan BTW - The Lloyds building is still there.. |

Do you not feel that barbel on the whole are getting bigger and bigger each season, how many river records went last season and how many made a large jump in
weight.
I tend to agree with the 'on the scales' comment and I am sure Walker did see something bigger but………………….. How many big fish saw a set of scales last season, remember when a twelve was a big fish, doesn't raise an eyebrow now does it? It would have to be a very slow week for a twelve to get into one of the weeklies nowadays, yet not too long ago it would have adorned the front page. Why are the fish getting bigger and getting bigger so damned quickly? Or where they always that big and no one had caught them? |

I think the amount of bait us anglers chuck in the river is one of the main factors regarding the accelerated growth of barbel. the same thing happened with
carp fishing when the explosion in fishing for them started. Also there are more of them in more rivers due to stocking policies. It's also true that,
because more people target them, more are caught.
Wensum..........lose some!

hi,well what if you fished the trent[for example]is the current record the biggest in the river just because its been in the net, dont think so.yes declan i
have mentioned about the 20lb+ barbel on the avon that r.w saw has been written in a couple of books, but i didnt get the info from a book, but from a former h.a
record holder who was with richard at the time.i met him on the avon about 4yrs ago[in his seventies now]i was just chatting to him about fishing, and the
subject of r.w came up.right out of the blue he mentioned those big barbel, the area and the swim itself.
i wouldnt mind betting that within the next two seasons a much bigger barbel comes out of the h.a,and if its near the the twenty pound mark it wont surprise me one bit,as for what i saw last season it would be speculation wouldnt it.derek.

Del boy, don't give too much away, you'll have that KevCI pestering you again
Anyway, as a Letchworth man myself I once saw RW walk into a lampost in Leys Avenue so I wouldn't put too much faith in his vision |

hi,i havnt, ime normally looking in the river In Leys Avenue you'd be looking into the river of beer nowadays Derek - you wouldn't believe the number of pubs which seem to have sprung-up up in the (once dry) First Garden City.. (In fact - I believe The Pelican in your old stomping ground is closed at the moment after a drugs raid!).. |

I had a look over a bridge on the Hampshire Avon this summer and spotted a huge barbel which to my amazement was then dwarfed by an even bigger fish. Must have
been 16 plus and very long indeed. Horsesnipples will confirm this as he was with me.

How can you tell when it's under a couple of feet of water? It could just as well be 14 (or 18!) as 16... I've looked at them in the net and been miles
out once lifted and weighed!

hi,stuart, there where at least 3 or 4 others with him at the time fred j talor, ian howcroft to mention two of them.
why do they get bigger, well my thoughts[for what there worth]is there has always been big barbel in there, bait may have something to do with it,as there are a hell of lot more anglers fishing for them now as apposed to the early days,so more bait going in,but i.m.o far to many anglers use to much of it,except maggotts or casters.if you find barbel in a swim happily swimming about in the same area, why bombard it with bait, there in that area because they like it,so wait until they vacate the swim before casting in[or lower it in]with just a small pva bag and hookbait, well thats what i do anyway.if its been about half an hour and you havnt had a pull round, start to make a cup of tea, then whack it. |
