Posts: 511 (13/03/08 14:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	It is indeed a lovely fish but, as someone who fishes the Yorkshire Ouse regularly, I know it takes a lot of patience and persaverence to catch large fish on less productive waters. Hence, my vote for the Sussex Ouse fish - it was a toss up between that and the Itchen fish for me. Time left to start of 2008 season:

Sure, it's a monster - as someone has already said, the biggest (still swimming) authenticated barbel in the country. I stand to be corrected but it is a known fish, is it not? And the Wensum has always had a track record of producing big fish - certainly in recent memory. It is a dream fish but if you fish the Wensum or the Ouse and you've done your homework then a fish of that size becomes a possibility. In contrast, the little river Itchen has always been known as a trout/grayling river and until relatively recently, it wasn't known that there were any barbel there. The previous record was just over 10lbs, so this new fish is very significant. I would imagine that there's very few barbel rivers that haven't been thoroughly explored. I think the Itchen is virtually undiscovered and for this reason alone, the Itchen fish should win. Size isn't everything. And no, I don't know the captor nor have I fished the Itchen! Regards, Dave.

If all the barbel fishing was like that, i'd pack it in and go try catch a record Gudgeon......

Perhaps I shouldn't rise to this bait, but why is it that as soon as a fishery becomes known for producing big fish it attracts these kind of negative comments - I'd suggest it's jealousy. There are several smallish rivers containing very big fish, indeed the Upper Gt Ouse is one of them, it's just that this particular Wensum fish is the biggest of them all. Being that this is a competition, if we are going to participate, we have to make a value judgement however that isn't to say we have to trash the achievements of the other captures. For the record this fishery is no more easy or difficult than any, this particular fish may have been caught with some regularity, however there are other very big fish in this stretch of river that often go a few years between capture. They have 3 miles of river to get lost in and in the winter the fishing can be very, very difficult. As for the procession of 'names' coming along to get it, this is a total nonsense. Indeed I'd hardly describe Mark Rylands as being a 'name', he is a Bailiff on the fishery and works hard on it's behalf, and I think it is totally disingenuous to make such a post! Perhaps we could try entering `FOTM' next season, picturing this fish with a selection of `holders', and see if anyone can catch a few more votes than Mr Worbey? Mark - I'll be first up if I may? Just PM me details of the stretch and swim, plus any bait and tactics the fish might have a preference for.. Come and take the pics if you like..
