May i echo eelfishers thoughts regarding the welfare of our catches, please look after them....im probably preaching to the converted but there are some people out there who use totally inappropriate tackle for Barbel on the Derwent.
On the birdwatching theme I was priviliged to watch a little owl feeding her offspring the other evening.

) and with the minimum amount of time spent with the fish exhausting itself on otherwise light/flimsy tackle that will unecessarily prolong its attempts to escape.
and a week to get over it) I was back saturday morning on the banks of our Derbyshire Derwent thinking that I had miissed out on the benifits of the recent deluge. As the sun rose I was soon into my first a small one with the biggest pikey teeth marks down the side of one flank. The next two fish came adrift of the hook 
Not long after I'm playing another good fish in the derwent torrent this time the hook holds and Lovely short but fat barbel is lying in the net. 10Lb 5oz she goes on the avons. after a bit of a lul I'm in again, and this one is realy pulling in the main flow of the river I decide to let it hang in the flow as there was no shifting it. Shortly I get the stubborn ass to move and she abligingly comes straight to the net. Phew it's another good one, out come the avons and double digits are reached again 10lb5oz.
