Dear ALL...... The magnificent Derwent was kind to me last night, with three lovely barbel coming to my net.......after the fabulous Trent served me up two lovely barbel earlier in the day. So, the glorious 16th was a dream opener for me with a total of five Trent and Derwent barbel on opening day in two very small sessions....... Having a 9lb'er off each river was the extra icing on the cake. (All fish were rested in the landing net after capture, and before unhooking, and all went back without any need for them to be held to recover.....lovely.) And so the season starts..........barbel will only be targeted when the conditions are right for them this summer and oh boy weren't the conditions right for them on opening day. Classic. From myself, to all the regular Derwent posters, here's hoping that you all enjoy rewarding sessions on the banks of this superb river, whether you are lucky enough to catch or not. Remember, there's more to this lark than catching stacks of fish. Kingfisher, common buzzard, swallows, sand martins, kestrel, sparrowhawk, yellow wagtails, common sandpiper, tawny owl, redshanks and a hobby all made my two short sessions more than worthwhile. Throw in the insect life, bats, fox and the peace and solitude of the surrounding countryside and it all adds up to utopia. Out tonight for a few hours (three tops) just to round off a great weekend. Rock on RATS. Yours With Respect........... Steve. |

Most certainly so Steve!
Great report.... if only for the birdlife you saw! Yellow wagtails have to be one of the most enjoyable birds in the world to watch, and swallows one of the most special.. albeit they are all exceptionally important. David Attenborough on Parkinson last night made it quite clear.. if you missed the show see if you can catch a repeat. I never knew a feathered fellow could imitate a chainsaw and the sound of a the shutter on a photographic camera. Not to mention the sound of every other animal and insect in the forest, and then some. Catch the show if you can... But after all, fishing is all about fun. There's no point being serious about fishing - unless of course the tucker is for the table. However be serious about having fun whilst fishing. After all we are not in the middle of the North Sea in winter fishing for flat fish now are we?! Maybe tonight you will see a badger, and perhaps even a new born baby cub.... catch a barbel and I can bet you will be drowning in icing Have fun now.. Cass |

Your right there Steve cracking conditions, I stayed in bed saturday morning after an hectic week at work, crazy I know but true, I was kicking myself all saturday for my stupidity.
I did get down sunday at 4 pm and was straight into a couple of very nice chub and that was it untill the light started to fade when the the first barb of the season came begrudgingly to the net. All was quiet again untill coming up to the eleventh hour I called it a day. Turning my back to the rods I hastely packed the few bits and pieces away that were lying about the ground, but there's a peculiar one noted sound coming from Imediately behind me. Turning quickly to take control of the rod I can feel that there is something a bit special on the other end. well it was soon in the net resting after bit of cajouling. On the avons it was just scraping the eleven pound mark Bird of the day..... very small owl flew over me in a straight line, fast wing beats.Could it be little owl? over to you Steve perhaps you can enlighten me. All the best guys for the new season. Paul. |

Had my 1st session of the season this afternoon, was supprised to find the river level much lower than I had expected.
Caught 3 barbel, up to about 8lbs, and lost 1 at the net that took a liking to the reed bed... Fishing a new stretch of the river to me this season, a promising start Matt |

Congratulations on the result........ I would think your thoughts on the owl were correct......they are in huge abundance in the tree line behind where you were perhaps fishing. A cracking result......well chuffed for you. Yours With Respect..... Steve. |

Thanks steve,
Your right I was in the general area, it's starting to feel like cheating now I must move on. Wonder how the guys are doing on the middle derwent Looks like we are all carrying on were we left off at the end of last season. And Matts had some too. Used to enjoy watching the short eared owls a couple of years back quartering the scrub land before dusk. Not seen them since then though. Laters Paul. |

Dear Matt
Funny you should say that but....Yes, I am actually heading down there later this aft. Hope I have similar results as you (and K1RK5, cheers Paul) As you have already indicated, I was anticipating the levels being reasonably fishable (just as they were despite all the water towards to end of last season) Hope to see either of during the coming weeks. Regards Roger PS Hoping to give my recent birthday present (the new MIDDY IQ Barbel rod plus Shimano Super 4000GT-RB reel) a good workout. After a few hints, the wife gave me them back in April and I've been itching to use them ever since |

What a great result for my first-time visit this season; a grand total of eleven barbel to 10lb 6 oz (plus 5 chub to 4lb, and an un-expected bream of 4lb+
Two of the three PoD swims I visited were "old favourites", where I started off at about 4.00 'til 8.30pm. The largest of six barbel caught (on good ole Elips) was 6lb 12 oz, as well as one of 4lb 8 oz. There were at least four more all coming under 3lb (and beautiful little, fin-perfect specimens they were too Then I moved downstream to try out a new swim, where that same little owl kept me company, perched high on a branch on the other bank. And that last move really put the icing on the cake, when I opted for a change of method on my second rod (my wife's excellent birthday gift) and hit my first double this season, on rolling meat using 15lb braid straight thru' to a size two hook Later on the meat brought me another good fish of 8lb 8 oz (as well as the 4lb chub). And to top the evening off in style, whilst packing bits before leaving, my other (Elips) rod (which had also accounted for two barbel of 6lb 8 oz and 5lb 6 oz) was nearly dragged in by my final specimen of the day, a chunky 9lb 12 oz barb. No wonder I drove all the way home at 12.30 with a broad grin from ear to ear Cheers Roger PS Two more club books have just recently arrived: Loughborough Soar AS (which will allow me to target the river more thoroughly this year) and Vauxhall AC, so that I can explore the possibilities of the 15lb-ers that were taken on The Ivel last season, not to mention some of The Gt Ouse whackers, as well Having now had my confidence boosted, I'm ready to take on new challenges |
