Hi all,I'm looking for advice on where to fish the Don.I had a little dabble for a few hours last week on a stretch in the middle of Sheffield and
managed to winkle out a nice grayling.

Does anyone know what the Barbel population is like from Sprotborough bridge to Doncaster town. It looks brill from the A1.

The first pegs fdrom the bridge,i.e 6-20,have been good recently,I had a PB today,9lb 10 oz,from peg 18,the rest doesn't get fished for barbel much.

Congratulations Ian.
Let's hope the barbel are finally returning to normality. |

I had planned to have a go on the Don this year. Around the Aldwarke to Kilnhurst area near to the steelworks, but with everywhere fishing badly I might as
well blank on the Dearne as anywhere else. It's much nearer.
Had two sessions on the Dearne this week using stick float and worm for a change. Yesterday I had one bite, a perch of around 8 - 12oz, and today - nothing in two miles of fishing. It's dire! Still, had two suicidal trout on a tiny tributary, both over 1lb. Daft thing is I've fished it exclusively with fly up to now and had nothing but dace and chub. |

I've got the Kilnhurst book,it's only £17,or £2 on the bank. The locals all stick float it,and do very well, but keep getting broken off by barbel. They
say there are some big ones, but I'm useless with a float,I need to learn.

Seventeen quid!!! I didn't known that it was a club water. I thought that stretch was derelict. In that case, I'll try the free bit if I want to blank
elsewhere than the Dearne.

Why blank on the Dearne? Just had chub to 4lb and Barbel to 7.5. Feed pellets, luncheon meta and oilies on hook

Yes, well done. But can you guarantee to do it every session?

I've found that the Barbel generally bite within the first few minutes. After that, there's nowt. Gotta keep moving. Where abouts are you Nicepix?

I'm nearer the Dearne than Don by a long way. I can be casting in at the nearest peg within ten minutes of locking the door. I've only fished the
Hillsborough part of the Don when I worked in Sheffield a few years back. Beeley Wood Rd and Hillsborough College stretches, and I had a Stocksbridge Works
book when I used to pay for my fishing. I've fancied fishing Sprotborough for awhile, but keep getting waylaid by all those lovely Dearne swims. And, I
enjoy a challenge.
I have found like you that the best chances come in the first few minutes. Indeed I have practised that most of this season. On one or two occasions recently though I have experimented by sticking it out for a while if I was confident that there were barbel in the swim - i.e. swims I had previously caught from. As a result I have banked a couple that I would have missed if I'd only stayed half an hour. You pays your money and takes your chance as they say. |
