Does anyone know how the Ivel fishes in flood at Biggleswade? Drove across it this morning and its looked impressive.

Yes. Not quite over the banks but 3-4 foot above the level it was a week or so ago. If you recall the timber 'bridge' on the Common its about a foot
below.

Not over the bank but LOADS of C--P coming down today, all those fishing today gave up including me.

Not seen cattle, or their 'calling cards' in the last few weeks when I have been on the Common. Two or three small bulls loose on the Back Meadow but
they seem to keep their distance. Went this morning but the Common was 'closed' for a match so went up river and blanked. Flow eased and level seems to
have dropped some. Also less rubbish coming down.

I appreciate that this venue is one of those "hard nuts to crack" and, similar to that of it's bigger (and tougher
 ) sister, The Ouse, a certain percentage amongst the fraternity of
"contributors" to this site can be, shall we say, "somewhat reticent" in terms of recent gen Furthermore, coupled with the recent fluctuating and all-encompassing
weather/water conditions, I fully realise that any reasonable results will have been hard won.
However, I am puzzled as to why there seems to have been (from the dearth of any postings for some three weeks  ) little or no info as to levels/colour/temps etc to, at least, provide some
basic data on which to base a planned visit. Surely, it's not inconcievable that there have been one or two "visitors" to the
bankside during this time?
A regular consultation (as well as contributions) by myself of recent postings on a number of other rivers with a view, solely to gather present conditions before deciding on a trip, is what makes this site so integral to my (and other anglers) fishing and is, 'ultimately, the raison d'etre for its existence. I certainly do not expect to gain any other info. that is the result of other anglers' investment in time and research (unless they are willing to volunteer it on a more 'discreet' level as, again, I am often prepared to do  )
In short, does anyone know how conditions are at the moment, please, as I would need to know before committing to a (petrol guzzling) 150-mile round trip. Regards Roger |

It may just be that not many guys on here are fishing the Ivel at the moment? Myself and HarryChubb had a go a couple of weeks ago, but in the cold conditions we couldn't even manage a Chub between us.. To be honest, I'm not sure why you'd want to make a 150 mile round trip to fish the Ivel (especially if you'd have to cross the Ouse to get there!).. It's a small river which sees a lot of pressure on the locations containing Barbel.. IMO there's a much better chance of finding a few empty swims, maybe even one with that `fish of a lifetime' in on the Ouse! Declan |

Of course, I realise that the topsy-turvy conditions since last June have not been an encouraging factor in the limited number of anglers on the banks this season, but there must other silly beggars like me who will still venture out, regardless. I go out every week on a Tuesday and Thursday without fail (although there were just three occasions when even I had to reluctantly admit defeat 'cold water-wise' and resort to stillwater piking instead )
Anyway, by way of explanation, one of the main reasons I am prepared to do that paricular journey is to fulfill a little challenge I set myself a few seasons ago when I began seriously targetting barbel. The idea was for me to catch a barbel (or two) from as many different rivers as was (reasonably) possible as I go from season to season. I certainly do not profess to be in the same sort of class as my ole mate Phil Smith, with his amazing 16 barbel (and doubles at that!) from 16 different rivers in one season  , but I've so far managed a total (to date) of 12 different rivers, with my most recent being just the one from The Arrow a few
weeks back.
I was also very pleased to have finally managed (during last season, after five seasons of trying occasional trips !) to have bagged my
first (two) barbel off The Ouse (from a Nene & Northants stretch), with one of 7lb 8 oz and, more gratifyingly, a second of 13lb 12 oz which was exactly
equal (weight-wise) to my all-time PB from the Kennet some five seasons ago.

Hinkley Dealer Had my 1st trip up there yesterday since before Christmas. Only did the morning and not another person up there. River was back down to normal
levels but did have a good flow on it and a tinge of colour. There was a slight frost 1st thing and as I was not there all day decided to have a go for other
species ended up with 4 good roach to 11/2lb and a small chub about 2lb but did bump a couple of nice roach as well did not take temp but fish felt very cold
to touch. From people I know that have fished it recently its been even more hit or bust than usual. Hope this helps but 1 problem with the Ivel is being such
a small river conditions change rapidly overnight.

Yours is exactly an example of the sort of info. I have been 'ranting' about. As far as the conditions you describe are concerned I would certainly have given some thought to a possible foray on my next available outing (Thursday), particularly as the air temps at least have come up a fair bit since Monday and, coupled with recent (warmish) rainfall, the river temp. itself might well have edged up by just a knicker-leg or so, which could well induce a bit of feeding activity. Thank you Roger PS Some nice roach you had there too ! I might even be tempted to take my Okuma Sheffield Pin and 13ft match rod (plus maggots) to try for some redfins myself, if all else fails. I managed to nab my PB chub (6lb 14 oz) by chance off the Derwent in March a couple of seasons ago doing the same thing, whilst waiting for my barbel rod tip to go round! |

The roach go a lot bigger than the ones I had yesterday I've had a couple of much bigger ones on barbel gear already this season. Did not really plan to fish for roach when I left home just fancied the swim when I got there next time I will make sure I take some bread in the car just in-case as think they were well up for it yesterday just did not have quite the right tackle and bait with me especially when downstream wind got up making float fishing nearly impossible. Might be up there tomorrow not decided between Ouse or Ivel yet but if I do I will let you know conditions when I get back. Stickfisher

Thanks for shaking the 'Ivel' section up. As you would have read I was hoping for this type of information to be available/and to be able to contribute to when I started this thread back in January. Having very limited time, usually only weekend mornings, and an 80 mile round trip, basic information on river conditions (and any match booking closures) would be most welcome. I expect to be visiting the river at least once at the weekend and any info you can supply following your Thursday trip will be appreciated. For those who want to know had a quick look at Ivel (of Sandy new road bridge) on way back from Ouse not sure of levels as not looked at this section before
but very coloured and plenty of floating rubbish coming down. You must of had alot more rain up there than we had in london yesterday as Ouse was above
platforms at Radwell and still rising about 4 inches between 8am and 2pm plenty of rubbish coming down as well during morning so much for my float and maggot
idea.

That's four more trips for me.
