Re: Somerton | ||

A lot of water to come downstream - Banbury is well and truly awash. I just hope some of the fish get back in the river channel before the floods recede.
Cheers

Does anyone remember how long it took after the floods of 1998 for the river to get back to normal?
Cheers

I'm a firefighter and spent friday night in Banbury trying to stop a potential chemical spillage. I didn't get called to general foods (kenco) which, I believe, was the cause of the big spill in '98, so hopefully there won't be any pollution to worry about! Also I live on the Cherwell and it has come down a lot since Saturday and is dropping by the hour, there may still be the chance of a fish this "summer"

Cherwell Flood Situation | ||
|
Crossed the Cher at Long Meadow by the Rock Of Gibraltar this morning and the situation still very serious down there, you can barely see any land and I don't think it will be safe to fish for quite some time.
I also crossed the Ray at Islip and that was also horrific, only just passable going South and impossible to travel north as deep flood water on the road at both Mill Lane and the usual flood spot outside the Swan. The Evenlode and Windrush are TOTAL NO GO areas for the forseeable future, the worst I have known them flood since records began. In fact the flooding at Charlbury on the Riv Evenlode on Saturday was absolutely terrifying, you had to see it to believe it, the whole floodplain was about 15 feet deep, being dammed by the road. Won't even mention the Thames! |

I live on the edge of central Oxford. At the foot of my garden is a stream which takes rainwater down to the Cherwell, I have just looked over the hedge and it appears to be running backwards. The Cherwell is rising fast!

Just went down to Shipton for a little look.
Check out the photo's, there is about 12 inches of water just past the gate to the field... Shocking. I hope the Barbel make it back to the river too Graham... They could find themselves along way from the channel as the water recedes. |

Lower Cherwell is really going to cop it now, Saturday i checked all the bridges, Clifton only just passable, Somerton well and truly shut, Rousham just starting to go over the road and White Hill --- river still well in its banks !!!! , checked again Sunday and as Stewart says its now all over the place although the upper river is dropping fast, wouldn,t want to live in Oxford at the moment.

Adam, hopefully you lads stopped the spill, Were you pumping out the Spiceball pool on Sunday ??
The Kenco thing buggered most of the river as far down as Tackley ,where i lived at the time, so hopefully nothing nasty has gotten into the river although i guess it would be well diluted ! |

I took a stroll up to the weir, it looks like a decent spot, and also down from it. Have you had Barbel from this area before Ian?
Cheers. Mark. |

Hi Mark,
No Mark i hav'nt,don't really do alot of barbel fishing on the cherwell but i know from the local match lads that there are hooked quite often,but not many are landed. Shipton is the place 2go as everyone knows,but its where you go when you get there is the key. Cheers Ian |

Yes, I was pumping at spiceball, bunds full of acid, chlorine etc! All safe as far as I know but I got relieved at 3a.m. The water at Clifton is back to normal winter flood levels and still dropping. But slowly! It didn't get anywhere near the '98 flood mark which is on the bridge there!

Re: Floods | ||

Plenty of barbel at Somerton??. I am amazed. I have fished that stretch on and off for 24 years and caught just 2. I did see a big fish there in the mid 90's when a reported 11 pounder came out. Evenlode is right about the big fish being found dead by the road bridge but it was longer ago than 10 years, nearer 23 years to be precise. It followed a bad pollution from General Foods that saw chub to 5.14 die as well. The Banbury Nomads specimen group saved some fish and put them in a pond in Middle Aston (chub) I think it was Alistair Nicholson who saved the chub from the pollution. Somerton has always been the subject of speculation about barbel but it is chasing shadows. I think they are nomadic and many a campaign, my own included, meet with very indifferent results. I have caught a lot of Cherwell barbel over the years but have never pinned a group of fish down at Somerton. The stretch does, howver, contain some very big chub.

All I have had from Sommerton is a cray the size of a lobster! Didn't land it either! I intend to return however and tame the beast, if nothing else!

I would suggest the first bend up from the bridge, any sunny day in the school holidays , you won't get bothered by crays then !
