did not make it wed evening but went on friday evening still racing through one small barbel hard work 2.5oz of lead to hold bottom should be fining down by early next week dont hold up for the spawning of this years fish but time will tell
I quote what TREFOR WEST said about fishing in flood conditions, The first thing to understand about fishing in flood water is that it is vital to look for areas where current speed and surface characteristics are right.with heavy colour in the water, the barbel will feed happiliy in swims less than 18inches deep . eddies we have no time for especially in flood conditions, in high water they are frequently turbulant with the result that flotsam is continually swirled around by the ever-varying currents exactly the enviroment that any self-respecting barbel is going to avoid like the plague. Re Bredbury Anglers
|
Used to be a bredbury member. They used to have two stretches on the Goyt. The kennels "Massey's" below Otterspool and "Black and White" which was above and inclusive of the wier at Woodbank, you were required to be a member for twelve months before you could pleasure fish the massey's length. This is old info but Normans of Woodley would probably put you right. It was and probably still is a good club. Loads of matches, good lads and great crack. Goyt matches were usually won with chub/bream in the 3lb class,no barbel back then !. Plenty of streamer weed up there back in the day, pacy water and some gravel. The lower length used to have loads of cover and slower steady glides, stick float/waggler water. If i get any new info regarding the club i will post it on these pages. I've just come back from an evening session, the rivers got about four foot on it and was rising as i left. I've had one take on a bollie over a bed of particles; for my second pb of the season, and i've not blanked in my last five sessions. I'm in love with the Goyt. See you in the Jungle. Happy Hunting........

About last night | ||
|
Interested that you caught last night(Sunday) Amberflanks. I was out from about 4pm until 11pm and the river rose a foot (from already a couple of feet up at least) and became very heavily coloured
All fine as I usually do well in these conditions but judging by what started to catch on my line from about 8 onwards I've a feeling somebody opened the gates at a sewage works somewhere. Unsurprisingly I blanked! Did anybody else notice the (literally) @#%$ coming down the river Sunday evening? Kev |

Re- Slip59 Sunday Session
|
When i arrived 7.30pm, ,i looked in the edge and had about a foot of visibility. The river looked normal and smelt normal given the extra water. I was fishing the lower reaches maybe this is a factor. The line was only fouled by natural debris twig leaves ect. Live update my mates in the swim i'm talking about and he's just phoned to say he's just had a 9.02lb fish ! .lol. I dont like to recast much so i have plenty of time to study the river. On sunday i watched it run off a couple of inches, then rise say two inches every hour until i left at 10.30pm. The colour had changed i noticed washing my bait tubs but put that down to the fact the river was rising, plus it still smelt ok. I do know what you are talkig about though. It used to happen on the Mersey you'd be catching on the stickfloat ,then you'd start getting false bites. The false bites were caused by paper from sewage .The river would change colour and start to reek. Time to go home ,dont know where your fishing but you should reprot it to the EA. Have a walk up the river Tame and observe the cover on the river festooned with every brand of sanitary product ever made by man. It's down to United Utillites who have the legal right to "pump waste into the river", to think that the general public are activley encouraged to use these areas is an outrage. U.U "have a responsibility to maintain the banks , but precious little seem's to get done.If you go looking for answers don't be suprised if they are all Very polite Very short and Very legal . See you in the Jungle. Happy Hunting.........

Re: Otterspool | ||

Sean, the easiest way to get directions for Otterspool. Do a google search for Wyevale Garden Centre at Marple. There is a map on their site . Otterspool is below the road bridge that crosses Goyt infront of the garden centre. If you are going to fish it you will need a Stockport Fed Card. Most local tackle dealers do the fed card £25 for a senior, think its a fiver ? for juniors.

Session report | ||
|
Hi all just got back this evening from 48hr session on the river and would like to share the following with you. Had a small 2lb 11 fish sunday evening before thunderstorm hit and river started rising rapidly so retrired to my bivvy till morning it came up by about 2 feet in total and spent most of the night wondering whether i'd wake up in liverpool. The river had a unusual milky colour to it not the not just the normal brown colour it has when flooding didn't notice any smell of sewage but did see sanity towel wash up on bank next morning. Had a nice 9lb 03 fish at 06:15, the river was back to pre tunderstorm level by then. The only other barbel I had and probably my most pleasing to date was at 11:00 when I caught a juvenile 0f 3-4 inches in length. This i'm sure you'll all agree is a very good sign for the future of our river. No barbel today but had a good session with Cstott88. (Pics to follow on gallery).

There Be Monsters | ||
|
Hi all, a question for you experienced barbel hunters, as this is my first season.
I am finding that when I hook into a large fish that decides that it really, really wants to go downstream (in fast water) I can slow it down but cannot stop it with my current tackle. 10lb main, 8lb hook and super specialist duo rod (3oz feeder). I can hold them for a while but I end up loosing the war when I try to bring them back. I have no problems if I take care with 7lb+ fish even during the recent high water levels. Do you think it unreasonable to relegate my current tackle to summer low water conditions and upgrade to 15lb main with 12-14lb hook length when the river is holding so much water? |

Re: There Be Monsters | ||

hi gaskes
I use 1lb3/4 avon quiver rod 15lb braid mainline and then vary hooklength depending on conditions if flooding use 12lb+ and if low and clear use 8-10lb mono. I've never had any problems fighting fish against current with this setup. Everyone here will probably tell you something different as we all use different rods/methods/rigs etc but you really should step your line up a bit for flood conditions. The rod should be ok if a heavy feeder type. Hi everyone been out for couple of hours this evening and had a nice 7lb10 fish about 10'oclock the river is looking perfect at the minute. See you on the bank. Paul |
