good start to season | ||
|
HI all where were all my fellow barbel anglers this weekend, not scared of a little rain I hope had pear mill weir all to myself all weekend(not that im complaining lol). Anyway seriously it was great start to season had to good fish one 9lb and one 9 1/2 (pics to follow on gallery). River was very high friday but stuck to plan of midnight start with great reward of first fish at 12.30 and the other saturday lunchtime. No barbel sunday but was bagging up on unusually high numbers of trout in weir, also good numbers of chub and grayling. river level dropped very quickly and was back to normal summer level by sat afternoon.
anyone else had good catches elsewhere on goyt opening weekend? |

Nice one Goyt Barbel, I must agree about the lack of other anglers on the bank. I walked the dog through Brabyns on Saturday and saw no-one and then returned on Sunday evening for a bit of trotting. I had a couple of nice chub on the float and a brownie to finish the evening. It looks like they have archived all the 2006 posts and re-jigged the site since Saturday. I had trouble finding this thread, I picked up on you being the newest member and followed your post! I can't get on the Ribble reports at the moment, hopefully things will sort themselves out soon. Good luck to all for the rest of the season.

Re: bent barbel | ||

Hi all: Just before the site went daft and we all started viewing different threads, I posted a query about the bent Barbel in the river. Slip suggested I put in on the general Barbel thread, which Ive done. I would appreciate any regular Goyters thoughts / observations (I know youve a few Jimsz) before contacting the EA.
If your still reading BBH please break your silence and advise if theyve always been that way. Regards, John. |

I've had a couple of "broken backed" barbs here, dunno if its relevant but it's a trait shared by some of the fish in the Dane.
Had about 35 trout, one grayling and 2 chub on Sunday morning (between 2 of us). No barbs though. Gregsy |

hi all
well done on the fishing. its been quite good had a bent barb and a couple of chub to date. just to add to the bent fish syndrome ive recorded all my catches and found i only had a couple from the pearmill area but higher up the river towards otterspool they seemed to be more common. each fish seemed healthy and strong averaging around six pound mark. all the chub and trout have been spot on. its worth looking into just for peace of mind. up to now ive assumed its summit to to with the pollution from years ago still lingering in areas. i was wondering why i was glowing in the dark. |

Hi Wazoo With ref to the bent backs on some of the barbel and chub this appears to be some form of genetic problem or a vitamim defficiancy and seems to appear in rivers nationwide,I know that the some stock did contain the odd fish with this trait but at the end of the day you give them the benefit of the doubt and by the sounds of things these odd fish have survived and gone on to mature into adult fish as is the case with nature in general. However I will be keeping a close eye on the situation.

Hi all, not fished yet, out this weekend, had a walk last monday, fishing not bad, the level has dropped, still slightly higher than usual, as there are a few areas ive fished from previously still under water, not much but that should be settling down now
well done on the barbel and chub, hopefully i can experience some success now this weekend dont know much about the bent backs of the barbel, honestly couldnt say any more than that but the vitamin defficiency is an interesting thought. tight lines dan |

Had a couple of nice chub out at weir at pear mill. Nothing after that. The fish were alright for a girlie - I think.
O sorry I am new member and fished the goyt around weir and paintmasters for the past 5 years and I think I have had nearly everything out of the river except pike and I know they are in there because I have seen a couple caught and then not landed . Tight lines |

Fished below Vernon Park for few hours last saturday (16th). No barbel, but it was a bit rushed,then Chav AC turned up team handed complete with tents,quads,kids and the hardest dog on their estate. Thought it might be tough but not that tough - 3hrs and home but a chub on the pellet saved a blank. Went out last saturday evening 23rd, fished the same length had a few pellet chub, and my second proper goyt barbel of about 7lb, well pleased. My mate fished the weir above the road bridge, tried some new tactics. He hooked 3 barbel and landed 1 of 4lb which is great to see. He's had a few multiple catches 3 and 4 fish in a session, both roving and static approches working. We have fished all the local rivers over the years, its great to see gold in The Goyt.

Re: bent barbel | ||

Not targeted the Barbel seriously on the Goyt yet, prefering to floatfish for the chub, barbel and grayling. Wrt bent barbel, I have caught a few barbel displaying these traits on the Severn and Teme, also the odd Pike from Loch Lomond shaped like boomerangs. Not sure of the cause, could be the result of poor handling, are they really that prolific in the Goyt or is it repeat captures? Time for the stupid question - do you guys have problems with the Signal Crayfish?

If you mean the giant lobsters
They can be seriously big and seriously annoying on a mild evening, they'll even take trotted maggots. I even tried crayfish oil as a bait additive but they are clearly cannibals as they went mad for it! |

Re Bent Barbel | ||

How do,we haven't come across any odd shaped fish yet. But we have only seen them off The Gazza Strip, below Pear Mill could it be localised to a particular stretch. We have been fishing 14mm pellets there would appear to be enough for ronnie,reggie,chub and the barbel, they are harder than the crayfish. You nearly always retreive a substantial bait still intact.

Just spent the evening reading through archive River Goyt Reports. Gobsmacked, thats some read sociable,passionate,educated and informative. Too many many people to thank and all that. So many thanks to to all who posted. Thats the best thing i've ever read about the local river angling scene. Keep up the good work.

river conditions | ||

just stating the obviose but the river is up and rising lots of debri coming down, waggon tryes, old canoes a wheelie bin be careful out there. fished yesterday evening and watched a number of people dicing with death on the flooded river ie one lad throwing stones at me from across the river slipped on his arse and nearly went on his way to the mersey!! was i gonna jump in after him?? i probably would have. a man throwing sticks for his dog in the weir, dog didnt look very comfortable in the flow..i mean flood, would he have jumped in if his dog got into trouble?? probably,another possible death.
on a more happy note i caught a couple of chub had an owl swoop down on me the change his mind and perch above me on a branch for a split second and silently flew off. also watched a badger going about his buisness undisturbed by me camo'ed up on the banks and to top it all a heron went to land next to us and caught me line giving me a six foot twitch on me rod making me think i had a huge bite fortunatley the heron took off again..not the most graceful of birds in a enclosed area. thats my bill oddy bit for the day. cheers all becareful eric |
