Re: barbel | ||

Should be worth mentioning aswell Ak47/ Phil, that
the Shop sells tickets for 2 different stretches- The Baths lenght, 1st half mile or so down from bridge, right hand bank (to concrete fence, sign marked). And the Newton Kyme stretch, which following a half mile or so of private fishing from the concrete fence to the first field outside of Boston Spa, continues on the right hand bank. Regards |

Fished the river for a couple of hours yesterday. River was well up on normal. Fish a couple of swims. Managed a massively long and thin pike on a bollie, not finding much to eat in these floods. Spoke to a chap ( Dr Barbus i believe) who said he had caught the same fish 30 mins before on a piece of meat. Must have been starving. Moved swims and had a small chub and a modest barbel. The river has risen overnight due to the heavy rain.

Took afternoon off work and fished Linton on Leeds water for very first time on Friday. I'd never caught a Wharfe barbel and I wanted to change that....
Lost 2 fish and then had a mad hour just before dark. Had 3 in 3 casts, first 4lbs ish, second 7.5lbs and third was 6.5lbs but long and lean. Left there absolutely soaked to the skin despite having good waterproofs, but a happy man. Not bad for first session down there. Julian |

May i be the first to congratulate Rich Smith, Ackworth, on his first ever barbel. It came from the Wharfe at Boston Spa and weighed in at 9lb 4oz. Picture will be on the gallery shortly. First time barbel fishing, 2nd cast he looses a small first, 3rd cast he lands the 9lb er! He finished on 2 barbel, a chub, and 3 lost fish (hookpulls).
Not bad for your first time out! Jammy git! I put it down to the expert tuition "Rivers and the inhabitants of the watery elements are made for wise men to contemplate and for fools to pass by without consideration."

Fished short session at Linton last night, 7.25pm til 10.10pm. River in good nick, few inches up and coloured.
1st cast barbel of 6lbs, followed it up with 2 chub of 2 and 2.5lbs respectively. Nice little session on a very nice evening..... Julian |

Re: River Wharfe | ||

Fished Wharfe again on Saturday. River in perfect nick, nicely coloured with a bit of extra water still in.
Fished 4 swims and ended up with 5 barbel between 3 and 5lbs and 3 chub to 3lbs. Had a really enjoyable day and never saw another angler at all which I found surprising for a Saturday. Ended up losing 1 very very big fish late afternoon. I know it was a monster but how big I really cannot say. I could hardly move this fish with 12lb line and ended up getting my line scraped against a snag on the bottom which caused the hooklength to part like cotton. I just knew I was going to lose it because despite having a 1.75lb test rod and 12lb line I felt massively overpowered by the force of the fish. Next time....... Julian |

I've had two sessions on The Wharfe this year.
First a morning blank. Second session, landed 3 and lost 2, best fish 7lb 9oz. Mate hooked a big carp and lost at net. |

Re: River Levels | ||

Been today from 6.30am til 11ish. When i got there the level was perfect, sun shining on the water. I could see 5 or 6 barbel patrolling the stretch in front of me about 2/3 across the river. Then ( about 9.30 am ) all of a sudden the pace of the water picked up and all sorts of rubbish came floating down including a football, branches and a copy of the Yorkshire post ( not sure of the headline ). The water level rose a foot in 20 minutes. i stayed til 10.30 and the water was still on the up. Can anyone explain this unusual event. is there some kind of lock/sluice above the weir at bostan spa.

Re: River Levels | ||

Mick,
I fished the river tonight 7-10pm, the level was up about 18 inches on the previous day. I could not understand where the water had come from - there must have been rain well up river. To my knowledge there is no lock/sluide avove the weir at Boston. There is another weir about 3/4 mile above the weir at Boston called flintmill (the ea river line level is recorded here). Just above this there is a water works at Wetherby which may explain the rise? Well done to the lad on the front page - I know that swim well! Stussy - putting the fashion back into fishing.

Re: River Levels | ||

I fished Wharfe on Saturday afternoon through til dark. River was a lot lower and I could see the bottom in most swims, I would have loved some extra water in!!!
I still managed 2 chub up to 4lbs and a nice 6.5lb barbel but they all came later on towards dark. It is a puzzler as to where that extra water has come from, it did not rain at all round here, unless it chucked it down right up in the hills.......... Julian |

Re: River Levels | ||

I went to the Wharfe on Suaturday afternoon to fish until dark.
Every fishable peg bar 1 was taken. I set up my gear in the one available peg and it became obvious that the Dad and Lad in the next two pegs were going to continue to shout to each other constantly. I didn't bother to fish and scoured the whole section for a peg( with more than 9 inches of water to fish into.) Lower down all the pegs on the far bank were taken. So I packed up, knackered and went home without casting a line. Last time I go to Newton Kyme on a weekend. |

Re: River Levels | ||

What a shame it was so busy at NK - I bet it had a lot to do with the weather mate. That was the first decent weekend of weather that we have had, plus a certain large fish got caught in the Wharfe recently which probably explains the extra attention.....
I only saw 2 other anglers on Saturday myself. Julian |

Re: River Levels | ||

Blunderer,
Which part of the newton Kyme stretch were you at, Top middle or lower? The lower stretch is usually very quiet (even on a weekend). If you want some info on where to fish in peace and quiet PM me. That was the first good weather weekend of the season which probably accounted for the number of anglers. Come October the banks are usually empty. Stussy - putting the fashion back into fishing.

Re: Wharfe | ||

Ak47,
Don't know how Newton Kyme is fishing but Boston Spa has slowed down a lot - maybe the fish are getting nearer there winter weights and are not on the munch so much? Stussy - putting the fashion back into fishing.

Fished tonight for a couple of hours had a small barbel four feet from the bank just after dark. Loads of chub knocks throughout the session. Stussy - putting the fashion back into fishing.
