Calm down lads.... its only a hobbie !! I think the rule is a compromise? Last year there was no fishing allowed on a Saturday during the season, so in theory
the situation has got better for the pleasure angler. If rules etc are not to peoples liking then just vote with your feet and walk - there is plenty more
excellent fishing within a stones throw of this section. I think that the current economic climate may see a small decline in club memeberships? People will
become more selective on their choice of clubs, so rules will become fairly important in that decision.However the NYSD is similar to the ATDAC where it is a
added benefit to the clubs who are affiliated to it?
I like fishing the matches and also pleasure fishing this stretch of river. Hopefully next season my sessions will be more productive. Last season was not good (I will blame the weather and river levels for that !! and not my poor techniques !!) |

I was told at the start of last year that it was only certain Saturdays that the water would be closed to pleasure anglers. Anyway, match anglers contribute a great deal to the economy of local clubs, in fact many clubs if they didn't have regular matches would be forced to give up some of their stretches of water, also match anglers make up a large percentage of any work parties that are active on the river, how many work parties have you moaners been part of??? Also matches are good social events and great places for youngsters to learn about fishing from some truely top notch anglers. This particular stretch is not match fished ever Sunday, so there's plenty of time for pleasure anglers to fish it, also I'd just like to point out that Dinsdaleman contributes a lot of his SPARE time to the maintenance of that fishery and through his voluntary work, not only there but with the local landowner, he has helped to establish and maintain a thriving fishery. So next time anyone fancies having a swipe at someone, have a good long think about how much you contribute during your spare time to the places you fish, apart from writing a cheque every year. |

joining thornaby | ||

hi all
was thinking of joining thornaby this year to get more access to stretches of the tees, went for a look down with a mate who is a member.hee some good looking parts but hard to get to with your gear(long walks down etc). what results have other members had from these stretches? matt |

I would personally say forget Thornaby if Barbel is your quarry as there isnt a good head of Barbel on the stretch at Croft and as you say the best
"Swim" or swims is a hell of a walk! Correct me if im wrong but instead of Thornaby , I would plum for Ferryhill as they also have some good water
and a stretch at Catterick on the Swale.

I am sorry Matt but I dont know about other stretches as im not a member. Its more by word of mouth that i know there stretches on the tees are decent.
Hopefully someone else will advise you, i just would not waste my money with Thornaby if its soley Barbel you are targeting as even for Chub Croft isnt as half as good as it was before the Barrage was built at stockton! I tend to go further afield to rivers which arent as unpredictable as the Tees due to compensation water from the resevoir's being fed into the river to help canoists on weekends at the Barrage.

Hi,
Stockton is not a bad club with water on the Tees from worsall right down to yarm. I have also been told that Darlington Brown Trout is worth a look at as well. Ferryhill have only one secton on the Tees at over dinsdale, the stretch is on the opposite bank to the associations water (ATDAC), so you are probably better joining a club with membership to ATDAC. The rest of Ferryhill water is on the Wear, Tyne, Swale and Browney (I think) Cheers |

Hello Matt,
as ja75 was saying try joining a club with ATDAC membership then you get access to stretches at Sockburn and Dinsdale as well. I am a Thornaby member and as Caster said in his post it is a bit of a hike to a decent swim but as I'm new to barbel fishing myself I can't really comment on the population of fish, though there have been some double figure fish caught on this stretch. Thornaby club also have a stretch at Brompton on Swale and a lovely looking stretch at Kilgram Bridge on the Ure. Cheers |

Rain needed desperately | ||
|
This is the lowest i have ever seen the river in May for the past 20 years,a huge amount of our migrating coarse fish are still stuck down at Yarm waiting for
a bit of fresh.If we dont get it soon it will be a poor start to the season as they always need 3 to 4 weeks to settle again after running up the river.
Made spotting easy though watched a big female Barbel and 3 much smaller males going through their routine at the Nursery at Dinsdale. Also spotted a shoal of 8 to 10 fish (at least 3 doubles) in the Sockburn Hall area,banks are once more like the Malayan jungle not that the Teeside Association will do anything about it.With no matches on the tollbridge stretch this year that will mean no pegs cleared so get down there with your strimmers if you want to be able to get near the river.Or alternatively contact your secretary and ask him to ask ATDAC why they have not had any work parties on there river stretches to make the banks safe for angling ,something they should be doing.
