Nice fish on a warm day Bryce , great to hear that you have sighted the Kite again . I have been away on the isle of Mull all week , hoping to see a Golden Eagle but no luck , lots of Buzzards , but I can see them at home ! Anyway a whole week without Barbel fishing , I must rectify the situation and get down to the river .

Re: Nidd | ||

A few hours on the Nidd last evening . River was very low with a slow flow , water temp at dusk 64 f , air 53 f . Tough going , no Barbel but a nice chub of 4.4 . Meteor showers were very spectacular , packed up early as felt duty bound to ply Mr Bowes with beer after his Ouse capture .Rain forecast soon so conditions may pick up , lets hope so . Tight lines to all .

Nidd again yesterday evening . I was expecting the river to have a bit of extra in after the rain but it hadn't come through [ not by midnight anyway - probably a raging torrent now ] . Air temp 61f water 62 f ,river low with a steady flow . Roved extensively but no joy with the Barbel , a medium sized chub saved the day , at least the otters not had all of them ,as until recently the chub have been conspicuous by their absence .Two tawny Owls having a shouting match provided some amusement .

Wild Life on the Nidd,sorry to maybe irritate those of you who know,but for those who dont;Red Kites,that I frequently see at Cowthorpe on the Nidd(coz thats where I fish) I am informed by a Birdy Watching collegue that they come from a breeding colony at Harewood house and have been released/escaped into the wild.As far as Otters go,well have seen loads and I mean loads of mink on the Nidd and the results of their feeding on the resident fish population,but I have never seen an Otter or the results of their feeding on the local fish population.Now I am a keen Salmon Angler and fish in Scotland and Wales a lot and have had the opportunity to watch Otters in several rivers almost at my feet and right along side me when deep wading and have seen the results of their feeding.Now I dont doubt any one who has seen Otters on the Nidd and I hope I have just made a right Knob of myself but nor have I seen one or any clue as to one on the River Nidd.Dont want to offend any one or come accross as a big headed know all,just would like to see them there as I dont begrudge their prescence at all.Pedro.

I strongly agree with you rennie I like to see otters two while I am fishing & have my self been privileged to seen them on the Nidd I have actually caught a good sized barbel while an otter was in my swim.As for those who don't like otters I say go fish where otters don't frequent as otters have more rite to be on the rivers than us anglers. Remember otters fish to live we fish for pleasure !
Personally when I go fishing & see Otters it just adds to the pleasure of the occasion & I don't care weather I catch fish or not as I have seen a animal most people never see in a lifetime. |

Pedro, my only claim to spotting something "Otter Like" on the Nidd was at "close to dark" (back in July), after just landing a chub of a pound or so, I looked up to see something quite large (scotty dog sized) and brown swimming towards me. Sadly, I moved, the beast sensed me and dived beneath not to be seen again. It was too dark to make a really positive ID on it.

Re: Nidd | ||

Hello Rennie , not sure if I understand your post . There are absolutely DEFINETLY otters on stretches of the Nidd , I have been within 3 foot of one in bright moonlight . I have seen many mink in my days , I still see them now, not often thank god , once you have seen both you certainly know the difference . I have seen mink on North Yorkshires rivers for over two decades but it is only in the last 3 years that otters have put in an appearance on the stretches I fish . Fantastic creatures , as for their effect on fish stocks , well as you know this is a contencious subject , fish is what they eat and too many otters could cause problems , however too many is not the case at the moment , and after all they were around long before we humans arrived . Our human practices drove them to near extinction , in my view we are guests in their river world full stop .
Nearly broke in to a rant then , phew, close shave . If otters are not wanted at Cowthorpe then think yourselves ' lucky ' there not present, [but they not far away though !].A purge against mink might not be a bad idea . However the ultimate fish eating machine has to be a seal , one was sighted at Cowthorpe swimming through a Bradford No 1 match a few years ago , it even made the papers . Now that thing could eat fish , I used to watch it on the Ouse , long gone thank goodness . Barbel survived OK but a LOT of pike were consumed . I hope this post doesn't start another Otter debate .... |

Nidd and Otters | ||
|
Otters are throughout the Ouse above York
The only place on the Nidd I have seen them is the mile or two above the confluence. The mink wont be around for long if the continue moving up the Nidd. I have caught within minutes of an Otter in the swim on the Ouse BUT not on the Nidd. |

Re: Nidd and Otters | ||

Darrell , the Otter[s] has made it a lot further up the Nidd than where you observed them . Incidentally I was walking the Swale at Asenby this p.m and found otter spraints there .An Otter was mooching about on the Ouse last night ,it swam straight throught my friend Jeffs swim . As an aside the Swale was approx 3 foot up with a fair bit of pace to it , looked good .

Re: Nidd | ||

Persistence pays Bryce , well done . All I have managed is chub . I have noted that in the last few days water temps have dropped significantly maybe this explains the tough going with the Barbel , and indeed other species .

Re: Nidd | ||

I was just wondering if there is any evidence whatsoever, that the presence of Otters will be the death knell for the Mink. Surely there is no precedence for this or anecdotal evidence, not that I know of anyway.
Mike has found evidence of an Otter at Asenby, the Mink seem to be getting on ok there also, and the same goes for a length of the Wharfe I fish, definite sightings of an Otter, but the Mink seem to be doing fine! Kev |

Re: Nidd | ||

I had a 4/5 hour session on the lower Nidd above Nun Monkton on Monday.
I took the g/f (her first session) and she bagged up on the maggot feeder with gudgeon, perch, and chub while I sat watching a motionless rod tip! I had nothing all day on meat or pellet/paste until, in desparation, I put a lobworm on as it got dark. I had a take within 5 mins, and a largish fish swirled on the surface. I didn't see what it was but my 8lb braid hooklink parted. Grrrr, won't be using that again. Back to Suffix Skin! Oh, and I managed to fall in while returning a gudgeon, and impaled my finger on a perch gill cover. Despite all that, it was a really good day! R. |

Robin
I would have thought on that stretch that a 8lb hooklength is a bit undergunned. In any case, probably a pike - hence the shear. |

Roved extensively last evening , the river is very low and clear , could'nt get a sniff of a barbel , a nice chub of 4.10 saved me from the blank , a bit of envigorating rain is required me thinks

Re: Nidd | ||
Quote: Why, do you know something I don't know about the size of the fish that have come out from it????!!!! I would think that 8lb BS, assuming it breaks at 8lb and not 4lb or 3lb (i.e. it is good quality braid) would be ample. That said, I don't usually use it. I think I only tied myself a hook link with it because I'd just used it to tie a size 14 hook for my g/f's rod to fish maggot feeder (it was the thinnest line I had in my bag). I'll be sticking with my suffix skin in future. R. PS. I was at Aldermaston Mill on the Kennet on Saturday and a young lad had an 11lb 8.5oz barbel out on a (very) light quiver rod and 6lb line! Lucky guy - his first barbel. I'll write a little more about it in the Kennet thread when I get chance. |

Hi All.Havnt had chance to post or fish for a while due to various domestic commitments .Can you advertise your wife for sale in the classifieds?.Fished on Monday @ Cowthorpe.Absolutly beautifull morning,was there @first light and just sat there for an hour taking in the dawn.River normal level and clear.Have been using pellet this year with an open end feeder with fantastic results.Caught one of 7lbs first cast backed up by another three between 4 and 6.Moved swims and caught another three between 3 and 6.Again one first cast.Watched a stoat hunting the opposite bank[not an otter]and saw a pair of Buzzards AND a Red Kite in the same thermal.A fantastic day which reminded me I must fish more often,its not all about catching fish but it helps.Regards to all.Adrian
