Hello folks .Fished lower Nidd last night [ sat ] River is about 2foot+ NSL , brisk pace and a tinge of colour ,tons[literally] of debris on the bank after the floods . The Himalayan balsam has taken a battering most of it has been flattened , very crunchy underfoot . One 7lb+ barbel at twilight on pellet and paste .This was a wily old fish I rested it in the net for 5 mins , went back down to unhook it at the waters edge, soon as the hook was out he went for it , a flick of the tail he was over the edge of the net and back in the river , I had to laugh .BOTD barn owl quartering the far bank - a lovely sight .

Hello Big jim , yes its an absolute jungle down there , I walked it pre season and the nettles etc were a real problem then , god knows what it's like with all the flood debris , well done with the fish . I bet it was good fun extracting them from those tight swims , I still think Nidd Barbel fight harder than those from other rivers , at times they seem almost turbo charged !

thanks mike and yes they do fight very hard.in all fairness the only other barbel that scrap like the nidd fish to me are the teme fish you could be forgiven for thinking you had real clonker then it turns out to be scrappy 5lb er. the nidd today was carrying extra water but not too much and the colour i thought was spot on for a pellet approach which seemed to do ok. all i did was hop from swim to swim with no loose feed just a single 14mm halibut. sometimes its all about location all the fish today came first chuck in a likely looking spot just off creases mid river when normally i get them near willows etc. probably why i got no chub but whos complaining.barbelmadman keep your eye on rain before tuesday cos the calder where i live has started rising again tonight it wont take much rain to make the river a wash out for tuesday.

Hello Barbelmadman , I wouldn't bother visiting the Nidd Tues . This p.m there were severe flood warnings for Hunsingore and Cattal , it has rained non stop for 16 hours !This said no doubt someone will say it is fishable but not say where [ see previous posts ] .It does go down as fast as it goes up though . Good luck !

Re: today | ||

That's one hell of a lot of water isn't it John . I managed to catch the Nidd in good conditions on Saturday night , but it changes remarkably and frighteningly quickly . I remember very well some six or seven years ago my son and I were on the Nidd . It was raining heavily but we decided to go for a roam and left some of our tackle behind to save lugging it around . We were gone an hour max , and returned to see our previous high and dry tackle , which had been left some or 2 or 3 feet up from the waters edge gently floating down the margins ! Doesn't encourage you to have a quiet nap on the Nidd if rains in the offing does it !

Re: levels | ||

Sorry Big jim haven't been on the Nidd , as can be seen on the Ouse links there is plenty of water around but I would hazard a guess that it would be fishable , good luck if you are wetting a line and go steady those banks will be very slippy

Hi all.Fished at Cowthorpe yesterday(Weds).River very high and coloured,at least 5-6ft up.Couldnt even see any trace of the island.Managed to find a fishable nearbank slack,got 3 Barbel,2about 3lbs,one at just under 6.They didnt half take some landing in the flow,so yes,it is fishable but take plenty of lead.4oz to hold bottom at the nearbank under my feet.B.O.T.D.Greater Spotted Woodpecker.River should be spot on soon because im working,but good luck to everybody.Ade.

Quote: Mike, if this is directed at my comments after Robin had posted pics of a flooded Ouse, then please consider why people won't say where they access the river in such conditions. If you think that I stumble across such areas and that there is plenty of water to go at, then you are mistaken. The bit of water we fished on opening day can realistically accomodate two anglers when the river is in full spate, so I'm hardly likely to start telling all and sundry and find my own fishing restricted. Anyhow, instead of looking at the same bits of water, do some legwork and the fishable areas become obvious. There are barbel in lots of places that people usually ignore in normal conditions, mainly as the barbel are often quite difficult to tempt, but with the river going into the fields, these places become a different story. This doesn't just apply to the Ouse either. Rob |

Rob,
It is perfectly understandable why you will not disclose where you fished on an almost unfishable river (I might not either as I am tired of meeting other anglers on the bank who openly admit to reading this site but do not contribute). However, you did put the fact that you fished the river in the public domain and out of curiosity people will have a tendency to ask, especially as the river was just about unfishable. Cheers Spiros Stussy - putting the fashion back into fishing.

Hello Rob . Yes I am sure you don't simply' stumble 'on these swims and I totally understand that you won't reveal exact locations , I wouldn't, not on an open forum,just general areas .In terms of getting out and doing the leg work , again you are right ,there is no substitute for exploring and identifying likely areas for flood fishing , and I've put plenty of that in over the recent close season and have the nettle stings to prove it ! No my response was driven , if I am totally honest by mild annoyance . At the time [15th of June],people were desperate to find fishable swims on badly swollen rivers - opening day fever really had a grip on us , me included . People were hunting around and reporting in to try and help each other find somewhere to wet a line and satiate there pent up excitement and anticipitation . I read your post and it it read as being slightly smug and unhelpful ,i.e we've found somewhere to fish and you lot haven't . If it was not intended as such , I apologise wholeheartedly .
Anyway have a good season , and tightlines ,may bump in to you some time on some far reach of the Nidd , your secrets swims will be safe with me ! |
