I have some places in mind, one specimen was spotted having a mooch around in a back brook; plus there are all the tackle shop "they do say..." & "down at mill..." stories to investigate.
Tight Lines "Neners" this year we will prove there in there! |

John,
It just so happens a little birdie told me of another stretch with good barbel in it, unfished at the moment. Basemix will be made in the next week, don't think I'm going to deploy the prebaiting tactic until later in the season.........say September as having thought about it a great deal more i don't see the need. It's the winter months i want the fish to be switched onto my bait as i honestly believe they will take anything at the start of the season. I'm off work until beginning of July so PM when you plan on going and I'll see if i can pop down and chew the fat. Best wishes all Nene anglers, I for one am certainly looking for a very good season. Hi guys,
Can't wait to get started.Not had much luck with the tench so far this year.So a change of species will be great. I see that Wellingborough club have another stretch of the Ouse at Harrold bridge.Anybody fished this before?Any info would be great. Anyway,best of luck to you all.And Bob,hope your back is better in time to catch that new river record. Cheers,Nige |

Re: nene | ||

Nige, hey this is good 4 posts into the Nene thread and we're discussing the Grt Ouse! The Chellington is OK, it does have boris I have seen them just not hooked them but most of my time was spent hunting the Nene. If you do go to Harrold beware of the cattle and the space between the edge of the bank and the fence is only 3 foot max. Probably see at "the complex" sometime soon and we can chat about all the W&DAC waters.

Middle Nene (Billing to Thrapston) on Flood Watch. Upper Nene (Daventry to N'pton) on Flood Watch. River Ise on Flood Watch. Alledge Brook on Flood Watch. I guess Harpers Brook and the Brouncy will have a good flow on them too.
Had a look this morning at Irthlingborough from the road bridge on way to work looked to have almost a foot on what it was yesterday. Flowing quite fast and strong under the pack bridge, had a bit of colour. As regulars will know this is not perfect Nene conditions Definately need our wellies lads and lasses! |

Still tanking through at Ditchford Bridge this evening. Down a foot or so from Saturday I'd guesstimate.

Re: Nene | ||

Result !! Absolutely tanking through but managed 3 bream, the biggest about 7lb and a lovely bronzie about 5lb. Then the rod keeled over and a scamp of about 5 1/2 to 6lb gave me probably one of the best fights ever from a barbel, just goes to show what they can do when they go with current. 10lb line with the clutch set pretty tight and it stripped line like a 20lb carp, awesome.

Well done Bob, a result, the most i have managed from any river is to walk along it at the moment, still plenty of time left yet.

hi mate ,regarding the ouse at harrold bridge. hav,nt fished it for a few years but most of the barbel in the bridge pool were small 1-3lbs.a bit of luncheon meat or corn will get you a few.there are a few carp resident there so if you get smashed it probably wont be a barbel of lifetime.you,r just below a syndicate stretch which holds some whoppers + with the river being in flood a walk below the bridge opposite harrold park could throw up a suprise.it,s all gravel bed along there. best luck Harry

Come on guys, get your skates on. Lost one on the take last night but saved the day with a scamp. Just lost a big barb to a hook pull.....my first ever. Had it on for about 10 seconds and all it did was take line from me. River is starting to drop nicely, just depends on how much rain we get over the next few days.
Also catching good bream and a tench today. All to a 8mm halibut pellet on a bait band and size 10 hook, 4 ounce feeder to hold bottom. Lets here from you lot, surely I'm not the only one catching at the moment Bob |

Re: river nene | ||

OK so what the score here? I go to all the good sports from last year and my catch is down to 15% of this time last year! Had to resort to worms and a #14 to get bites and these were a handfull of perch and small chub.
On the way to one swim, back brook at Brightwell, the parking area was so flooded a 8-10lb pike was milling around in the carpark eating the fry! The levels appear to be flying up and down and the colour is one minute clear then filthy, guess this is effecting the fishing. Bob, your just winding me up now!! |

Bob, answer to your Grt Ouse comment...
OK so Turvey is on the Grt Ouse not the Nene, you got me there! Nene fishing so far this season; almost all at the local complex, back brook midnight of 16th thru 3am nothing, eve/night of 16th on the "point" nothing, later in the week back brook twice nothing, lock cut and point nothing, "house boat/dredger thingy" nothing. Secret Nene backbrook weir pool miles away... 5 nice fat perch (doesnt hold boris but does hold carp, bream, chub and angry jacks). I am sure there are no fish between those two locks except roach, eels and big pike, its featureless. |

Re: river nene | ||

John,
Purchased said Wellingborough ticket yesterday and fished the wier, no fish but i did get a few knocks. The conditions are now perfect. Get out there tonight if you can, fish the bit where the canal lock chanel joins the back brook. Fish right on the crease with a feeder and halibut pellets in the feeder, put pellets on the hook as well.....use a bait band. Bob |

Re: river nene | ||

So you threw a line in the weir and had the debris knock your line eh?
I might give it another go tonight before I sell all my gear and take up trainspotting... |
