Fished Thornton Bridge last night with my good mate Jim. He'd never caught a Yorkshire barbel so that was the priority last night. Mission was a success.
River was steaming through, the pegs I fished on Friday were under 6 or 7 feet of chocolate brown water so that ruled them out completely. Too dangerous for one and no way of getting a bait out or holding bottom. Wandered the length and eventually found a few suitable swims. Trouble was that a lot of the time I was finding it very snaggy. Perseverance paid off for Jim - 3 barbel caught, all about same size of 3.5 to 4lbs, all fought like crazy in the current as well (it was good fun to watch him play these fish because now he knows how hard they fight I did manage a consolation roach at last knockings which was about 1lb, its actually a PB from the Swale but I wish I had caught it on light gear instead of 12lb line. No boris for me but the main mission was to get Jim a fish on the board and we managed that. Nice evening in good company. Back to the rivers on Sunday for us I reckon. Julian |

Re: Swale | ||

Yeah good advice mate. When I was there on Weds night the banks were treacherous, and the river was steaming through, so if more water is in then its only going to get worse.
I just hope it drops a few feet by Sunday. I still want a few feet of water in and nicely coloured of course but not quite as much in as there is now! |

Had a short early evening session at Topcliffe yesterday.
It was a lovely sunny afternoon so I persuaded the girlfriend to come, bringing here 14-year old with her. You know what kids are like - get bored easily - so I decided to use maggot feeder on one rod in the hope of getting plenty of action. As it happened I only got one fish on that rod - a small Tommy Ruffe! ![]() All the rest of the fish fell to garlic spam - a small chub (< 1lb, not weighed), 5lb barbel, 3lb 13oz chub. I also had two missed takes, and two fish that came off the hook after 5-10 seconds - they felt like chub. All in all, a very pleasant evening. R. |

Went to Cundall yesterday 12pm - 11pm
River was up at approx .200 above NSL and steady Managed 2 bites resulting in a 3.10 barbel and then a PB 8.10 so I was one happy chappy!! Ended the day in hospital after impaling my left middle finger on a solar baiting needle by about an inch - The drill was laid next to it in the box but I was lazy. Lesson learned, wont do that again. Cant move finger and may have damaged tendons so cant fish at moment as I cant hold the landing net. WHAT A STUPID THING TO DO!! |

Re: Swale | ||

Jimbo I feel for you mate, that sounds painful. I did a similar thing myself a few years ago when carping and I managed to get the needle back out. Damn painful though. Like you I was trying to get the needle through a hard bait and should have used the drill.
Nice couple of fish though, and a PB, almost makes it worthwhile....maybe. I fished Swale on Sunday, Catterick on Leeds water, then Pickhill on Bradford water and finally Thornton Bridge again on Bradford water. Struggled to find boris, only managed a brown trout near 2lbs from Catterick which had a liking for pellets and actually took whilst I was reeling in, had nothing at Pickhill but found a lovely stretch of river, and at Thornton Bridge I managed a chub of about 3.5lbs but that was it. At least I didn't blank. I do have to mention one person though that I was none too pleased with, I was fishing at Thornton Bridge when someone appeared behind me clearly wanting to fish the peg I was in. I could hear him tutting and crashing through the dense undergrowth moaning under his breath, he then went above me in a very densely overgrown swim, one which I had looked at myself and left alone because its too awkward to fish, or even land a fish. He then proceeded to get his saw out and for 10 mins all I could hear was the sound of lumber being hacked, eventually there was an almighty crack and a whole branch at least 15 feet long and weighing more than me crashed into the water a few yards above me. Another chap who wasn't fishing kindly helped this person bring the branch out of the river to stop it going through my line but by then the damage was done. I might as well have gone for a swim myself for all the fish I was going to catch after that. What gets me even more is that this angler then sat in the swim he had destroyed and made so much noise in, that I cannot understand why he would bother! No barbel in its right mind would stay there with all that noise going on. So to this angler I say thanks very much, you destroyed not only the peace but my swim and your swim and I hope you caught zero for your efforts! Sorry if you are a member on here but doing stuff like that when other anglers are around is not on. Julian |

Julian, congratulations on keeping your patience! If that ever happened to me, the offender would be swimming after barbel not fishing!
Fishing the swale for the first time on saturday so fingers crossed ill get amongst em! "Rivers and the inhabitants of the watery elements are made for wise men to contemplate and for fools to pass by without consideration."

Re: Swale | ||

Good hunting mate. I am off to find a secluded bit of the Swale on Sunday myself so that I don't bump into that offending angler again! Honestly it beats me how some people manage to catch fish, what happened to being crafty/stealthy eh??
Looking at forecast I don't think we will have any extra water in which is a shame, looks like its back to low clear conditions and waiting til dark for a bite! I almost want that rain back!! Julian |

Julian, sounds like you did well not to lose your rag with the idiot. I think you might get some rain between now and Sunday mate. Going on the Tees again tonight myself. No joy so far, but I know they're there. Good luck mate. Will get back to you on arranging a Swale trip.........then I can help you to chuck somebody in!

Yeah I'll say you did well on the patience front! Beats me how these people catch too. What happened to common courtesy towards fellow anglers and the countryside?
Is anyone on here a regular at Cundall, may bump into you on the bank and have a natter at some point!? |

Re: Swale | ||

I think the majority of us Jimbo are courteous to our fellow anglers, and quiet enough, there are just one or two who don't follow the same code. Shame on them.
Bill - like I've said before I'd love to meet up and have a day on the Swale with you, let me know when and we will sort something out mate. Tight lines all. J |

Evening Swalers
River is now at NSL with a bit of colour. Had a little rain today which may help hold the colour over the weekend. Water is alive with minnows, can't keep a pellet on the hair for longer than a few minutes and caught loads in the feeder!! - looks like its back to boilies .... Tight lines F |

Re: swale | ||

Well the finger healed well and no damage to tendons etc so I was back on the bank yesterday for a few hours:
Intended to fish 12pm til about 6pm but at half 4 they went mad so I stayed. Ended with 8 barbel and a chub between 4:30pm and 10:25pm. 5.02, 6.06, 2.08, 3.12, 6.00, 4.08, 5.10, a 3.00 chub and then the creme-de-la-creme a cracking 9.08 PB barbel which luckily came as another chap was chatting to me so he helped with the landing and photo's - cheers fella if your a member on here!! Couldn't bring myself to go home so after losing a small fish at 12:30am I got my head down in the car til 3:30am and started again. Managed another 4 barbel and another chub. 6.04, 4.10, 4.07, a 2.00 chub and then a stonking 8.12 barbel to end a truly memorable session for me!! Until last Tuesday my PB of 8.08 stood for twenty years and I've never come close since and then bang 3 in one week! I also got snapped by a large fish just before the 8.12. Gotta say the guy who helped me with the PB was tops, when I said I was going to stay the night he went back to his camp and told his mate and their GF's. At half 11 the girls came wandering up the bank with a bag containing 2 cans of Carling, a can of vimto, 3 donuts, 2 bags of crisps and the offer of blankets to keep me warm!! Superb gesture and greatly appreciated. Why cant there be more people like that willing to help others without even batting an eye! Cant wait to get back on the bank!! |

Jimbo you're a nutter!!
Great fishing. When they are 'avin it' its always worth staying. I fished Asenby in pouring rain yesterday, found a great swim and stayed there til dark. Not like me cos I usually move around but this particular swim looked too good to move from. Had 1 good "klonk" on the rod tip and that was it. No other bites. My mate Jim had a 2.5lb barbel right at the death then we packed up. Wasn't bothered that I blanked yesterday cos I had 3 out on Friday night on the Wharfe! Will be back there soon because the swim I was in has great potential...... Julian |

hi all
cracking session jimbo on a hard water at the best of times you said you not giving up on it till you cracked,not the double yet but you cracked it all right well done.Is your arm in a sling,with a strain. Managed 6 barbel saturday day time so me well happy too,had 1 about 1,2.9lb then lost 2 in a branch sticking up with a tree under the water,just could not stop them,was gutted,would have been happy with just the 1 but when you loose 2 on the trot,it ends up the day that could have been,was going to move, because of loseing more rigs due to snags,but me no quitter,the next wave of attack came 2 by 2,just had to hang on and get them away from the snag. 8.13lb 8.2lb 7.14lb the biggest 3.Mate was in same swim and blanked,same bait rig,rods 3 feet apart even put his rod on my bank stick and it just didnt happen anybody no why. Tried the nidd yesterday jullian dont think it for me didnt realise how narrow it was,pinned down with the rain so coulnt fish and move,then dropped in at asenby on way home for a few hours,1 bite no fish there,they just didnt seem to want it. see you all phil |

Cheers Julian / Phil
Where has the potential Julian - Asenby or the Wharfe swim? Its always gutting to lose fish so I feel for you Phil! Sounds like you had a pretty damn good session yourself. That's a cracking trio of fish to catch! I have completed my Leeds and Barbel Society application forms and Im going to get a Bradford book also I think. Be nice to fish some other stretches and maybe bump into a few of you guys too!? |

Crikey, thought I'd done well to get 3 out Sunday morning but you lot are bagging up!!
It'll take the fun out it if it gets any easier Phil - had my 8 year old with me the other day, reminded me of that story you posted last year, made me smile. |

Re: New Season | ||

Sorry Jimbo I should have clarified - I was referring to the potential at Asenby. The short stretch that Bradford No.1 have there behind the sewage works is worth a look mate. Ok it didn't produce for me but I bet it would on another occasion. Its directly opposite the Barbel Society water that they class as Topcliffe.
Phil - another great session by the sounds of it. Sorry to hear of your adventure on the Nidd, I like the Nidd precisely because it is narrow and overgrown but its not to everyone's tastes I suppose. My fave river by far is the Swale so I do find it hard to pull myself away and fish another river. I can't fish now for at least 7 days so I will sulk instead. Julian |
