My tinca came from a previously unclaimed water north of Otley by the gravel works and is now Ilkley Angling. An old fella (81) in the club has had a 8-7 out. There are some carp but I didn't see any sign.

fished swale today 27th looked really good but as usual the swale flatters to deceive managed 2 1@ 9lbs2oz the other about 4lbs fishing mate had 1@9lbs 15oz another of those and the other about 7lbs. have they just fed too much we thought that in those conditions we should have caught more.

Hi
Congrats to everyone who has ventured out so far this season. What is the water level at the moment? Are the banks safe? Im thinking of going to either thorntons bridge or asenby at the weekend. Both of which have steep banks so any info on water levels / fishability would be appreciated. Bren |

and Swallows. There must have been a late afternoon insect hatch as they were all low over the river.
Brendon, not a problem with the river level though the banks at Asenby looked a little trecherous, though there were the odd one or two fishing |

Hi
Just come back from a 5 hour afternoon session around thorntons bridge. River must be 4/5ft up and tanking through. Watched rise about a ft when I was fishing. Lots of debris coming through so I struggled to hold bottom with a 3oz lead. Fished double pellet in pva bags of pellets and diced meat soaked in attractor. I ended up double bagging the bags to ensure I had bait around my hookbait when it finally settled. Anyway I blanked!!! Not a very experienced river angler so I usually struggle knowing where the best spots are when the river is in flood. Also had a quick look at the no1 stretch at asenby. Again up quite a few feet and tanking through. Bren |

Phil
I know what you mean. I suppose it all comes with more time on the bank. What do you think of the fawdington stretch? Ive had a look a couple of times but never really fished it. Bren |

Swale | ||

Hi All,
Had a few hours last night on a very high (and rising) lower Swale but managed 4 barbel up to 5lb. Not a bad result for my first attempt on the Swale this season. Anth had two better ones up to 7.5lb. Think we're getting the hang of flood fishing as a few years ago I would have turned round and gone home in such conditions. Phil, I'm no expert but the advice I would give is: Look for a crease or an area of smooth current where you can hold bottom. Put plenty of bait in to give a good scent trail (pva bags work well too). If you don't get anything within an hour or so then move - in summer floods they'll usually be having it, its just a question of where! Cheers Jeff |

Re: Swale | ||

Sounds like you had a good session Saturday Phil, good fishing mate.
I fished Thornton Bridge on Friday afternoon, decided on a last minute half a day holiday and managed to get to the bank for about 2.30pm. I was surprised to find no-one else there and a lovely looking Swale with a few feet of water in. I really did fancy my chances. Anyway I was right - 3 barbel netted, one first cast at 3lbs, the next was an 8lbs-exactly fish in great condition which put up an awesome fight to be honest, and then a smaller 5.5lbs fish to end with. I also had a really good bite at the end, struck and connected with thin air! The river rose a good 12 to 14 inches whilst I was there, plus the bank was treacherous so anyone going down there at the moment should take extra care. All the fish I caught came from the same swim and all were caught at about a rod length from the bank, under my own bank almost. Out in the main flow it took 3 oz of lead to hold bottom but fishing the edge of the crease I managed to get away with half of that and still was able to hold bottom. I really like it at Thornton Bridge, lovely bit of the Swale. I should fish it more often! Jeff - best advice you can give mate, what more can you say? Look for the likely swims by reading the river and if you catch nothing after an hour, move on. That is exactly how i fish for barbel. Julian |

Re: Swale | ||

Nice one Jeff and Julian sounds like we had similar sessions.
Thanks for the advice lads,fished and moved sunday covered most of the stretch but no joy,mate not barbel fished for 2 year since took up fluff chucking would have been good if he got one out.Jeff fished your peg i seen you in last season when i was further down from you and anth,they were under the tree on saturday suprised how close in they were.Is that where you were sunday same peg,put plenty of bait in saturday and fed them when i left hope it helped.An 11.6lb came out further up on saturday.Cheers Jeff We'll have to have a fish'in sometime,get a few there and see what comes out,see what pegs produce etc,£5 each for biggest fish caught,gets him a drink,not Anth though Jeff we dont stand a chance with his swale record. See you lads phil |
