John
If your targeting Morton bridge your much better off being in Northallerton club as Stocktons water is on the wrong bank. |

Hi all
i ventured out lower swale Never fished the swale that high before but thought done the drive ill have a few chucks,there was a few other anglers as daft as me then,met a lad had not seen since left school,hi gavin,keep in touch,he left as i was about to fish.I BLANKED BUT GAVE IT AGO,met 3 other sound lads,jeff ,garry and tom jeff caught 2 small barbel which were about half a pound,the future barbel look good,as it was the first barbel of the season he openend a bottle of champagne,which i thought was a good touch,and kindly excepted a cup full. Was a really good day out even though never got much fishing done or caught out. Good hunting lads all the best for the new season phil |

Hi All,
Anth and I went down to the Swale on Saturday and decided against fishing. Congratulations to those who managed to catch as it couldn't have been tougher! Any sign of it settling down yet? Cheers Jeff |

Re: River Swale | ||

Jeff - I fished a Richmond AS match yesterday and the Swale above Brompton was in really good nick.
It was running off quickly as well so I imagine today (as long as no more rain of course) it will be about NSL. Had a lovely colour to it too. I'm glad most anglers saw sense and did not fish the rivers Friday night, I think we would have seen a few anglers get washed away. Hopefully this Saturday the river will be in good nick for my first proper go at em!! Julian |

Re: River Swale | ||

I fished Sunday , the river was dropping rapidly from Saturdays 12foot+ levels,and perfectly fishable , get yourself down before the heavens open again .The Barbel are feeding as are the chub .Watch out for slippery and undercut banks - tight lines .

Julian
Were many barbel caught in the match? They were up for it Saturday evening so I expected the noted pegs to fish well during the match on Sunday morning. River is still carrying some extra water which does it the world of good, make hay while the sun shines, in a few weeks it'll be back to a few deep holes and no interest in anything bigger than a maggot ... Happy new year to all swale anglers.Fished swale yesterday 18th. river still up about 2ft. good colour had 1barb about 6lbs. and then the chub came on had 4 in the 3 to4lbs. range.I did notice the barbel took quite a time to recover something to look out for.

Re: River Swale | ||

Hi Stephen,
No barbel caught in the match at all, I drew peg 32 which is above Skeeby Beck where it joins the Swale, downstream of the Bailey Bridge. I've drawn that peg about 4 times (going back nearly 20 years that is!) and always done reasonably well, but I have never noted it as a barbel peg. Yes I am aware that barbel have been caught down there, but at NSL the river there is very shallow and they tend to be further upstream or downstream at the jettys. Having said that the river was a few feet up and had a nice colour and pace on Sunday, and I had a couple of willows to anchor a bait up to, so I did give it a try for barbel or chub to start with. First hour tried 2 different hookbaits and fed small amount of hemp and pellet, not a sniff. I didn't want to blank so I quickly changed over to maggots, first run through a trout, then another one and so on. Had a couple of nice grayling and a couple of decent dace before bites completely dried up. Went back to the barbel rod for last hour and tried further across the river, again not even a sniff from a chub. Weighed in 6lbs 1oz enough for 4th, not bad, winner was on peg 30 with 12lbs 4oz, same net of fish as me but difference was he caught a chub of 4lb and an eel, those bonus fish won the match for him. Out of all the pegs that were used, I reckon 2 were what I would call regular barbel pegs so I was up against it at the draw really, I knew that unless I got one of the known spots I would struggle for barbel. I'll be up this weekend to see what I can catch, probably get a few hours in on Saturday. Julian |

Re: Topcliffe stretch | ||

Thanks Phil
I'll sort the application asap for Leeds. Where abouts did you used to fish at Cundall?? I tend to fish the length immediately above the weir down to the first bend and also the very end of the stretch too. Its never been too kind to me either but Im determined to crack it at before giving up on it!! |

Re: River Swale | ||

Hi Julian
I know peg 32 well, in fact I caught my very first swale barbel from that very peg while stick float fishing with maggot. I am surprised no barbel showed, as you say the river looked good, quite a contrast to Friday night!!! I had my PB second cast of season at 10-0 dead and another at 9-2 on Saturday evening but blanked Sunday morning so it looks like normal service has resumed ... Stephen |
