Would think the fish were about 4 pounds each and the price was about £10 a Kilo. Don't hold me to those figures but think I am about right .
The way of the world and at least they were farmed.

Have just got back from my local Tesco - Romford, Essex, and was buying some fish and noticed that they are selling Mirror Carp.

There has been a fair bit in the weeklies about the subject Linkledger.
I cant make up my mind if its good or bad. On one hand, it dose mean that "anyone" who wants to eat Carp can now get a ready supply.... legally, but on the other hand, if someone gets the taste for Carp, it doesn't take Einstein to work out where those same people can go and get there own fish....for free (illegally) Steve |

Common sight in the Fishmongers in Reading - has been for decades - then there has been a Polish Community in the town since the war. Carp is a traditional
Christmas dish for Poles....

Linkledger, all fish are farmed,
So if you walked over to the fish counter and saw a Barbel weighing say 8lb would you think differently or would you think well it's farmed ??????? |

Carp were introduced into the UK as a source of food in the 16th century (I think?). They were introduced by Monks so as they could eat fish on Fridays when
they were forbidden to eat meat. Most monasteries had stew ponds where carp were farmed.

Not sure if all fish are farmed but we can leave that aside. Just saying what I saw - leagally bought not poached from lakes or rivers. Not trying to wind people up - just stating a fact. |

Just a point but I always understood that mirror carp were originally and still are, bred for the table. We, here in Britain, must be the only population on
the planet who do not regard coarse fish as a food source. As a modern coarse angler I think that is a state of affairs worth maintaining. Eels? If Iwas hungry
enough!

Sorry that I didn't explain properly.
Know all about carp being farmed by monks etc and don't have a problem with people eating them - or other farmed fish. If they were OK would give them a go myself - have seen people eat Zander in one of the best restaurants in town and they loved it. My observation was that this is the first time I have seen Carp sold in my local supermarket which is the biggest chain in the country - not a local shop catering for the local population. Just wondered if this was the start of a new trend or just a seasonal selling opportunity? |

i work in a sainsburys distribution centre and have seen mirror carp coming in and out the doors for over 20 years, i have nothing to do with chilled
distribution side of things so i don't know which towns they have been going to, but judging by the amount i would take it to be a few select stores
only...

Yes your right about carp being stocked for the table by monks, they started with the common's, then the mirror's and finally the leather's
because to much trouble with removing the scales!!!

There are inland lakes in Sweden as big as some UK counties. They fish commercially for coarse fish and sell them allover Europe.

In Germany they have carp in tanks outside restaurants and you can pick the one you want for the table - not for me.
Also in Australia they are considered as vermin and it is illegal to return them to the rivers if they are caught, the educated ex pats ignore this risking being fined. Regards Phil

Yeah, i know a couple of money from aussie, and he said that the rivers just smelt of these like 60lb carp rotting on the sides of the bank, just goes to prove
dangerious introducing non-native species
