Posts: 39 (07/07/07 18:21) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	That's odd - anyone who regularly reads Stewart Bloor's Angling Diary (as I do) knows that he always includes precise details of the weight of the fish he catches, and from which river they were caught (although obviously not the exact location). Perhaps he meant that he doesn't report them to the angling press? Anyway, after last Saturday's success with my first Dove barbel, I didn't get a sniff of one today. I did manage a new pb chub of 4.75lb, though, and also my first Dove brownie (about z). No sign of the goosander family this week (last week they were down to 5 from their original . Nice to see a couple of hares running about in the walk down to the river. No fishing next weekend as I've got a god-daughter's wedding to go to.

Fished Saturday daytime river well up / pacy and coloured, (0.62m) level was holding when i left at 5.00pm. Tough session had to really work for a couple of fish, a 9lbs & 7lbr, both caught within 30 mins of been in the swims. Had a chat with a few anglers on the bank, nothing doing. Surprised river is still high i thought it would have dropped over the last two days, assume the water is coming from whats left in the ground which when you look in the fields could be alot of water ?? In my view i think at the moment its a case of been in the right spot at the right time they are not crawling up the rod in numbers, while the river maintains this high level. If the river could drop a bit i think it will fish really well. Stu

Must be a different lot of goosanders unless they're covering a lot of water!

Posts: 4 (08/07/07 21:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Fished Scropton SOTAS stretch saturday was suprised to have the river to myself except for one other chap.Fished from 3.30 to 9.30,had a fish of 8.75 with first chuck then had to wait another 2 hours for 3 chub in as many casts(all 4ib +) just before my belly got the better of me(i was hungrier than the fish)my rod was snatched of the rest by a fish of 9lb 4! All in all not a bad session

Arrived late to find the banks very busy. I suspect that many anglers have been waiting for the water levels to drop back from the heights reached since the season started. News from the anglers allready fishing was that all was very quiet. The River was down but still coloured, more like tea than mud! I fished a new spot for me which just looked a nice pace and with the near vertical banks had probably never been barbel fished before. I was lucky to manage a 9-6 and then hooked what I thought was a huge barbel, landed after a superb fight it turned out to be a 15lb carp! I really struggled landing it from my high-level spot and packed up a happy camper. Spent a good hour chatting with John P and Ian at the carpark..late night for all, Thanks lads.

A few anglers about. Had a cracking day roving a couple of stretches, river in good trim and a nice overcast day. Early on i baited a few swims, dropped in first one and landed a nice 8lbr, the second swim was a new one that i hadn't fished before quite weedy and very pacy, landed two 5lb barbs within 10mins, i though must be one of those small barbel swims. Carried on fishing then the rod flew over again, was expecting another small barb but this one didn't come in so easy, a great fight and my best barb from the Dove at 12lbs 1oz. Re-baited the swim and tried another spot upstream for 30 mins, no action so dropped back into the weedy swim 2mins and the rod flew over again, another cracking double of 11lbs 2oz a very deep fish. Ended up with a total of twelve barbs for the session, others were between 9.11lbs - 5lbs, hard work moving around but well worth the effort. Stu

I saw a mirror about that size in the Dove at the weekend, (probably on the same stretch if you were speaking to John P) poking about in the edge. Wondered if it was river-born and bred or a recent wash-in from a flooded pond.

I can remember seeing them in there about 40 years ago. I've only ever hooked one though, trotting for dace with stick float and maggot. Lost it at the net, looked about 10 lb - a mirror carp.

I witnessed an 18lb common from the pump-house about 10 or 11 years ago (incidentally this was one of a pair that I had seen in the closed season). About the same time there were strong rumours of a 20+ mirror from above the road bridge at Tutbury - I don't think it was ever confirmed. The most well known fish was a football shaped mirror on The Willows that always weighed about 14lbs. I have hooked this fish but never landed it. Once again I've not heard of this fish coming out for a good while. Maybe this was the fish FrenchCarper had?? Stretches like horse shoe meadow used to provide regular sport with carp in the 8 to 12 pound bracket - anyone seen these recently??

Think it was a couple of years ago now but can't remember who told me. Don't think he weighed it either but guestimated at around 18 to 20lb by those who witnessed it. Rob

I think I caught the same fish three or four years ago from the outfall swim, it went 15lb odd. I have seen a fair few carp in the usual stretch over the years and have had odd ones, strangely usually from the shallower faster paced areas.I would say I have had maybe eight over the last 15 years. I also heard the rumours about the 20+ mirror, I even met an angler once who said he had had it at 26lb. Based on his other far fetched stories I discounted it as being rubbish! I have had three different mirrors now from the barbel stretch, an 11lb football shaped fish (really tatty old thing) and a 13-14 and my recent 15-2. I also had a common last season off the middle reaches at 10lb odd (I think this was an escapee from our adjacent stillwater). I really do prefer barbel but certainly the majority of my dove carp have fought far harder than the barbel, my last one was a real good fighter and a great looking fish. I take it you blokes are local, well you're lucky! A double from a river I've never set eyes on in a hideous tempest, absolutely drenched, river up with all sorts coming down, trees, dead horses etc. (not really). Superb, what's the history of these fish? Are they from the Trent, or when were they stocked?

I think the only natural interaction between barbel of the Dove and Trent takes place between the confluence and the first weir just upstream of the A38 and monks bridge. for no logical reason, maybe just for the sake of it or to feed the comorants, BMAA or the EA stocked the Dove near Marston about five years ago with a few hundred small barbel. I think those fish were from calverton (trent bred barbel). Congratulations on the double from your first trip. it could be a fair indication that the Dove has a very high head of big specimen barbel now, definitely many more than there used to be. Rob

BMAA have not stocked any barbel in the River Dove. The fish were all stocked by the EA. As an angling club with rights on the River the BMAA are informed of any stocking but do not have any influence.

As an angling club with rights on the River the BMAA are informed of any stocking but do not have any influence." glad to have confirmed that responsibility for stocking Trent barbel into another river already containing huge and thriving indigenous numbers of the species didn't lay with Burton Mutual AA but rather the EA. our governing body dosen't half make some odd decissions. this was a clear example of that. rob

I have absolutely no idea why it was deemed to be a requirement to restock a River which is doing very nicely by being left well alone. I suspect that the moans of some anglers/clubs about their inability to catch small fish may have had something to do with it. The stretch also received restocking of chub and dace from the EA.
