Bill, I hope you 'get on first' on your chosen swim this weekend. Good luck for the coming season.

Paul, there won't be anyone fishing my swim.
Cos I haven't decided where to fish yet. Anyway thanks, a little bit of luck goes a long way. Especially at the start of the season. I'm almost tempted to go on Friday and wait for the magical midnight hour for that first cast. But will probably go on Sunday night when all the Day Shift have all gone home. Bill |

Re: Dove | ||

Latest news I have is that the river is on its way up and carrying colour. Hope there isn't too much rubbish coming down. The upper Trent usually suffers more from that though.

If anyone is out there tomorrow I would appreciate a report on levels.

Re: Dove | ||

River rising fast but still within its banks (could break through on lower lying banks), though I had to move my seat back by six ft as the night wore on. Great colour, lots of surface rubbish but the bottom is fairly clear. Arrived at around 8.30pm and had the pick of the river. Set up in a leisurely fashion and proceeded to do a bit of bait and wait, flipping a few mixed size pellets in. Cast in on the stroke and as the lead settled had a line bite. Something was down there!
00:10 a glorious positive bite and the first fish of the season, a hard fighting 9 lb 4 oz barbel. It's great to be back! Fished through until 2 am but had no more bites or indications. More than happy though with such a great start. |

Well done Paul. A good fish to start the season.
The river seems to be full of those lovely nine pounders nowadays. I was hoping it wouldn't be quite bank high. Hope it fines down a bit before Sunday night. I've never really had much success on a flooded Dove. Bill |

Nice one Paul.
Just reward for venturing out when others (me included) bottled out. Hope to see you on the bank this year. |

Re: Dove | ||

River seems to be rising again. Not too sure what from, I didn't think it rained that much yesterday. Anyway, river was high but stable yesterday morning and then this morning it was about 6 inches lower and I assumed it was going to continue to drop. However, when I packed up at 2pm it had come up and extra foot. Another inch or so and I would have got wet feet - it was up to the top of my waders at one point crossing the field. It hasn't bothered the fish though. As long as you can find a suitable spot that is. Had 4 yesterday and 2 today + 2 chub. All 8-9 ish. They seemed to have quite a few parasites on them (little shrimpy like things not sure what they are). Is this normal?

Re: dove | ||

Snuck in a cheeky one hour session Sunday evening, conditions as Jim describes. One fish after 50 minutes 8 lb 8 oz unfortunately had to pack up and leave then. Banks strangely quiet at the moment but I'm not knocking it.

Hi All,
Firstly good luck for the current season all you Dove fishers. I'm after some help, we are stopping at Ashbourne the end of July and myself and my 12 year old son was wondering if there are any day ticket stretches not to far from us that we could wet our lines into on the evenings. Going with the family so we could quite easily sneak away for a few hours. I'll gladly help with info on the Ouse, Trent or even the Nene if any of you would like to sample any of those rivers. Many Thanks. Shaun |

Re: dove | ||

Sorry Shaun don't know any dayticket stretches.
Blanked on Sunday evening when conditions seemed ideal. Plenty of chub action but no boris appeared. It was about 10 inches up and very coloured. Don't know the temp but the water felt cold. Chub were not their usual cautious selves and seemed determined to hook themselves. I hate it when they are in that mood, much prefer it when they come "bobby knocking" and leave the bait intact for Boris. One three pounder even paid me a visit twice greedy s*d Bill Should have added that tradition dictates that I start the new season with a string of blanks so it's nothing new for me. |

Hi Shaun
Don't know of any day ticket stretches either. If you are staying for a week and want to fish a few evenings, I can sort you a half price club ticket, that'll be £14 for yourself and nowt for your lad. If you want just one evening I'm sure we can sort something out. Our water is about 20 mins (13 miles) from Ashbourne. mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/B.I.W.A.S. Hope this helps. Neil |

Re: Dove | ||

I am a little bewildered with regards to the river levels on Sunday. All other reports from Sun evening (Bill, Jim etc.) say it was up 6-10 inch, yet when I left at 2pm it was pouring over the banks. I was fishing Ratcliffe, at the end of the river but even so, it makes me wonder if I had the day right. Confused and baffled. No real change from the norm I suppose.

Re: Dove | ||

Lazy - if you were on Ratcliffe's water I'm not surprised, it must have been backing up a fair bit from the Trent which was up against the library wall in Burton. The river certainly from Monk's up was as reported.

It does back up from the Trent but there were several weirs between me and the Trent.
