So far so good! Three afternoon/evening sessions over the last week. Last Thursday (4pm to dark) - Blank! Saturday (4pm to dark) - 3lb 7oz (9:30pm). Monday (2pm - 8pm) - 9lb 6oz (4pm) & 3lb 4oz (6pm). Water still rising. Saw an inquisitive mink watching me slip and slide! Celebratory fish 'n' chips meant I missed the thunderstorms, a good day for intuition! Cracking river and not without significant challenges! Plenty to learn.

If you put the effort in the Ouse has its rewards . As I and others have said before it is an enigmatic but beguiling river , for me it always has an air of mystery about it [ cue sarcy comments re it's a mystery where the Barbel are !] I love it , muddy banks , monster floods and all . There is a pic of Robs fish on 'Yorkshire fishing .net' , website . You can now compare and contrast . Its a lovely looking fish .This is , of course presuming that the fish pictured is Rob's 12-9 Ouse record .If I presume wrongly , apologies for mis-information .

I am hoping to get a flyer from work today and any info would be good as I have been working away over the last couple of days and will pick my venues depending on level. Thanks K

Posts: 1387 (19/07/07 12:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I fished Tuesday , river was up about +2 foot NSL and not noticeably rising , water temp at dusk 61f , fish coming out [ well 1 barbel and a few eels]. I haven't looked at river above York since ,and am at work at moment . In York the river is falling , approx + 2-3 foot NSL . I would give it a go , I think you would be able to find a swim on most stretches . Hope this is useful .

For those contemplating this weekend river looked like NSL + 18 inches at Fulford.Should be OK for weekend.

Short evening session produced 3 small/medium Barbel . Water temp at dusk was 57f . Tightlines

Braid, I use Drennan sink link in 12lb BS and NEVER had a problem anywhere with it, knotless knot for the hook and blood knot for the swivel, I have 100% faith in this set up. Problem being when getting snagged up, you really have to pull some to get a break!! Dan

Brief session on the Ouse yesterday evening .River was ,[is] around about NSL , water temp at dusk 57f , air 52 f . Only one fish. but a beauty , 8.8 , a fin perfect summer Barbel , not a mark on it and fighting fit . My friend Jeff didn't connect with the Barbel but managed a lovely Brown trout of approx 1.8, taken on that classic trout attractor the 14mm halibut pellet ! With an Ouse Sea trout already notched off , it's got to be a salmon next -go for it Jeff !

Is that the dry halibut fly or leaded Mike? My brief spell on the Ouse last night only resulted in several heart racing moments when one or two bats drifted into my line and plucked the rod tip around in an impressive fashion. I'll have to stop using that Camo line! Good luck all!

Posts: 1387 (26/07/07 11:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Definetly leaded Steve !The bats can be fun can't they , I try and keep my rods as near to the surface as possible to minimise this problem , this said they swoop so low they still manage to clatter in to the line even when there is only a tiny bit showing above the water .I presume they are attracted to the line as the signal they receive must make them think that the line is actually insect life for them to eat . I have had bats hit the line and end up in the water , they usually manage to get out unaided but I have on occasion given them a helping hand with the landing net . Anyway the bat knocks keep me on my toes on a quiet night some do a very good impression of a 3 foot twitch !

One nice Barbel , and guess what , another Brown trout similar size to the one Jeff had a couple of nights ago , I see a trend developing .! River was around NSL , water temp at dusk 59f . If this trout thing carries on I will be reporting on fly hatches on the Ouse .

One theory is that they are stockies washed down from the Swale tributaries in the floods, possible , but my friend Jeff ,who knows about matters trout ,maintains they are not stockies but are true wild fish . Bit slow on the Barbel front , just one medium sized fish to complement the brownie . Tight lines to all .River is NSL but still with a reasonable pace , water temp 60 f .

Or made them a little hungrier perhaps!! At this catch rate Mike, the book prices will need to go up!! I'm trying to get down there on an evening or two this week myself but work is trying it's best to scupper those plans!

Tuesday - blanked (well, am not counting the 4oz perch!) - Pike was chasing small fry around my patch. Should have moved in hindsight but learnt alot about the swim rolling a few baits around. Wednesday - blanked again - lost a good fish at about 9:20pm, a very strong third run towards a snag took out the hooklink. Still, rarely been happpier with two blanks on the trot (well, three now!). Learnt alot more about the stretch I'm concentrating on. Better luck next time - can't score with every shot!

Last evening I blanked on a very low and slow flowing Ouse , water temp was 62f . The evening before in almost identical conditions I took 2 good barbel ,the biggest a superbly conditioned specimen of 8.13 ,it's a funny old river . I can't compain though , I have caught more Ouse Barbel this season [ barely 6 weeks in ] than in the whole of last season , reason - it has to be the run of high water conditions . We are all told that Barbel like floods and as far as anything can ,these results prove that maxim .

I've had the same happen to me on last two visits to the Swale, both times I ended up with a brown trout of between 1.5 and 2lbs on a halibut pellet and this is up at Catterick so its quite a way up. I am sure these were not stockies, they looked wild to me and were in mint condition, had no nicks in their fins etc which is a trait you see with stockies. I cannot explain why they would take a pellet or two apart from to say they must have been hungry.... Julian

Probably just catching more now (on baits you wouldn't normally expect to be Trout takers), due to the Summer spate waters affecting fly hatches.

I fairly regularly see some big brownies on the Ouse taking moths and daddy long legs at dusk .The difference is that I have never , until recently caught them when Barbel fishing . As has been said the poor fly hatches could explain their exceptional hunger , whatever they look very well on whatever they are eating , beautiful fish .

Had 14 best 5lb z eels a real nuisence. Talking to the one other guy there he told me of a 9lb+ he had last season. Heres hoping.
