Kenkroy,
If you use a fine, brown/white flecked braid and what looked like a size 8 Drennan/ESP hook I think I might have one of your hooklinks... |

Clonker ! | ||
|
Couple of hours on the Ouse last night . Not a touch for over 2 hours then two medium size barbel in 5 mins . Content with this I begin gathering my gear to trudge home when the rod whacked round and bingo , after a dogged fight an 11lb 7oz beauty graced the net .Result ! River was vitually at NSL water temp 61 f , air at dusk 56 f . Halibut pellet and homemade paste did the trick . I wonder how much the old girl will weigh by the end of the season .Happy days [P.S tim , the Seer was well up to the job !]

Re: hooklink found | ||

Matt,Robin,
sounds like it could be mine. I was trying out a nuflex braid,which I have doubts as to its breaking strain stated at 10 lbs. both fish I lost broke me at the swivel knot. I assume it was in a fish,how big? |

re: hooklink | ||
|
Kenkroy,
Yes, it was in a fish, about 6 1/2lb at a guess. I use that Suffix Nuflex for tenching, it's nice and fine and soft isn't it but it doesn't like being blood knotted! Not saying that is how you tied yours though. Great fish Mike. Do you think it's the one you had last year? (Which, incidentally and in his and my opinion, doesn't appear to be the fish Darren Starkey caught in 2004). Something else to ponder regarding ceiling weights of Ouse barbel. My mate caught a fish at 12lb 6oz in November 2004 (different from Darren's 11lb 10oz and different from the 12 that Dr Barbus posted a picture of last season) which was in very good condition and was what we considered to be a young looking fish. We speculated as to what it it might weigh each of the following winters but I caught it in December last year when it weighed 11lb 9oz. It has some distinctive colouring so was the same fish and still looked great but wieghed almost a pound less at a similar time of year. Possibly a fish that has peaked and passed it's best? Interested to hear views. |

Re: re: hooklink | ||

Matt,
I'm interested to hear you say that you think that the fish Mike caught last year at 11lb 8oz is different to Starkey's 11lb 10oz fish. Looking at both pictures, I would say that it almost certainly *is* the same fish. I believe Mike is of the same opinion, but I'm sure he will make his views known in due course! Mike & I compared photos of his recent capture and the 11lb 8oz fish last night and, whilst the recent photo is not very good, there are a few features which lead me to believe that it is the same fish he caught last year. Again, I believe Mike agrees I'm sure he'll respond when he gets the chance. Regarding knots for braid, I use just one knot for both braid and mono - the uni knot. I've not had one break on me yet - the line always snaps first. I do use another knot for flourocarbon - the Orvis knot, but I don't use flouro all that often so rarely use this knot. R. |

Re: re: hooklink | ||

Hello Matt , I have examined high quality digital photos of the 11.8 fish I caught last August , and the the 11.10 caught by Darren Starkey , they are the same fish .Re the fish I caught the other evening . As Robin has mentioned the picture I took was rushed and not of the best quality [I was fishing alone and anxious to get the fish back in to the river and basically made a bit of a pigs ear of the snap].However with a bit of computer jiggery pokery [ thanks Robin ], I was able to see that the fish had a number of similarities to the 11.8 I caught last year , not conclusive that it was the same fish , but likely .Anyway what is great is that the fish is alive and kicking .I do know that since Darren caught the fish , it has been recaptured at least 3 times .I am looking forward to catching one of the high 9lb fish that came out from various places last season , they have got to be doubles by now ! It is heartening to be catching Barbel in good numbers so early in the season , normally the river can be a pretty dour prospect until autumn , obviously the unseasonal floods have helped matters .Re the braid incident , I don't trust the stuff heard far too many tales of it snapping in situations where it shouldn't be failing . Look at ANY thread on braid and you will always find one person saying that so and so brand is brilliant and reliable , and the next person saying that there 15lb b.s braid snapped when they were playing a 2oz Gudgeon or something . Not for me but each to their own .

Re: hooklink | ||

Mike,nice fish ,well done.
Your comments on braid have me thinking. After many fish on braid with no problems,but after losing two in a week.......Was it of benifit using braid or was I just being lucky? I would hate to think I would lose a dream double if unessessary brakeages occured using braid when a simple alternative would do. As your excellent recent fish is proof in fact,braid is not essential.Have I just become a tackle tart? I will ponder on the use of my hooklinks and let fish on the bank resolve the question. Just for the record, knot was a polmar. Tight lines for the weekend todays rain may make things interesting. Ken |

Re: hooklink | ||

No line is infallable /100% reliable , however I read and hear of a lot more breakage issues around braid than I do Nylon .Braid in some respects is superior to Nylon particulary in terms of sensitivity to bites , excellent for touch ledgering and rolling baits etc, but putting the pros and cons together I would always plump for Nylon

Growth rates | ||
|
Mike, Robin,
I wasn't certain but seeing as you two are I'll take it that they are one and the same. Like you say Mike, good that it's doing fine. Although it's weight may fluctuate over the year and it could be heavier were it to be caught in Winter, it doesn't appear to be growing (unless you measure fish and can say differently)? Perhaps another example of a fish that's just freewheeling? Anybody know if Doctor Barbus' and Rob Parson's fish were the same? Doctor/Rob?? |
|||
mikehodgkiss |
Re: Growth rates | ||
|
I think the Barbel I caught at 11.8 may have 'peaked 'in weight terms as it comes out at roughly the same weight i.e between 11.8 and 11.10. This said the captures I am aware of have all been in summer / early Autumn , it may gain weight in winter .Your experiences of Ouse Barbel certainly indicate significant weight fluctuations in known fish ,and I have noted this with the odd repeat captures that I have made .Re Rob Parsons and Dr B's fish , I have no idea , no photo was ever publicised of Robs fish [ to my knowledge ]so we can't compare .

Re: Growth rates | ||

Nice fish Mike. I nearly bought that rod myself!
With regards to braided hooklengths I have never had it break although I check it after every cast and replace if neccessary. I have found that the coated braid is better on rivers like the Wharfe where the bottom is gravel, but uncoated braid is fine for the Nidd etc. I use the mahseer knot for all my knots: www.barbel.co.uk/articlefr.htm and it has never let me down in 18 moths of use (yet). Wet night | ||
|
I ventured out on a short session tonight.
Had a 4lb 12oz bream first cast, then it went quiet for an hour or so. When I reeled in, both my bait bands had broken so I'd had no bait on for who knows how long. Bugger. I rebaited my first rod and cast in. Whilst rebaiting rod #2 (i.e. within 2 minutes) I had a bite and pulled a 3lb 12oz barbel out. It went quiet for another hour or so and again, when I reeled in, both bait bands were broken. Grrr. I must do something about that. Oh, and I got v. wet too! R. |

Re: Tidal river | ||

Has anybody any info or experinece of barbel in the Ouse below Naburn falls.
York A of A have miles of water and you can take your car right down the river bank. It looks like there could be a fish or two in alot of the swims. Any thoughts?? Ken |

Re: Tidal river | ||

I have never fished this area myself , but I know for sure there are Barbel present .A chap I know caught a large number of small Barbel in one session a few years ago . I seem to remember some previous discussions on the Ouse link about this subject , have a trawl back in the archive I' pretty sure there is something there .

Re: Tidal river | ||

The EA water study showed small barbel turning up below the weir. There are also some large Carp down there apparently. If you contact the EA they will supply you the results of any fish surveys / electrofishing recently (i asked them for some info on the Foss recently and I got a reply within a week).
