Spiros,
I'd rather not go round Robin after meeting him! Both he and Mike have a wierd fixation with camo stilettos!!! |

The river was fishable yesterday, if you know where to head for. Also, if everyone waits until "mid-week" then I won't be complaining

Re Ouse conditions | ||
|
Just had a wander down to watch Mr Bowes wetting a line . The Ouse is on the up , put on 5 foot since last night and rising I would say it is about 9+on NSL . I will keep an eye on it and report for the weekend if anyone is fancying a trip out . I guess the Nidd must have a fair bit in it as well , although I havent actually had a look .Dan /Steve etc might be an idea to an ask for a report on the Nidd link if you are still planning a trip . I don't think work commitments will allow me enough time to have a look tomorrow but I will try .

Well, with an introduction like that, how could I disappoint...
![]() 5lb 6oz, caught on garlic spam. I couldn't get out until late and fished 21:50 - about 00:30. Had one bite all night; not a wrap around. Fortunately I hit it. I'm afraid that the photo is not up to my usual standards as my Ghillie (Mike "David Bailey" Hodgkiss) had deserted me! R. |

Re:Small Barbel | ||

Hello folks , had an interesting 3 hours on the river last evening . I had 4 Barbel on the bank [ no monsters], two of which were around the 2 pound mark . In my experience this is very unusual for this river , I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of Barbel I have had of this size from the Ouse ., they are usually 5-6lb minimum. Both fish were in absolutely mint condition , they looked like they had just been made ! Has anyone one else had any experience of catching small Barbel from the Ouse . where have they come from , are they stockies? Downside of the session was not one but two hook pulls ,one from a very big fish ,double b****r .River in good shape 4 foot up on NSL and falling , water temp at end of evening 58f
Tight lines to all |

Re: Re:Small Barbel | ||

Mike,
The weir on the Nidd was removed in 2000 (i think at Skip bridge?) which was thought to prevent Barbel from moving from the Ouse to spawning grounds upstream. Given this fact it should allow for the smaller fish you caught. Also last season small barbel were showing in matches as far down as Poppleton - lets hope things carry on like this. Well done on the catch! |

Re: Re:Small Barbel | ||

I'm not sure how that explains smaller fish appearing in the Ouse. Presumably, they could always swim *down* the weir, i.e. from Nidd towards Ouse?

Re: Re:Small Barbel | ||

Siros
you are probably right based on what is said in the Durham University study. Robin if the mature Barbel could not get upstream of the now defunct gauging weir to spawn there are no small barbel to swim downstream over it! Mike During the time of the gauging weir, they may have used alternative more pressurised, and so less successful spawning grounds - hence the current 5 to 8lb class fish. To quote Ray Walton: Quote: So the 2/3lb Barbel you are seeing could date back to 2000/2001 when the gauging weir was removed. The successful spawning on the Nidd stretches complements the Ouse spawnings so that may explain why they are being caught in higher numbers both upstream and downstream of the Nidd mouth. Very small barbel (below one pound) are notoriously hard to catch - I have only caught two in 20 years of Barbel fishing. There again I rarely target sub one pound Barbel! I think my smallest last year was just over One Pound upstream of the Nidd mouth. -- Dr Barbus

Re: Re:Small Barbel | ||

Vey interesting Darryl [ and Spiros ] thanks for that . The little Barbel are beautiful to look at , the smallest one I have had in the Ouse can have weighed no more than 6oz ,still put up a good scrap though . Might try and get out for a couple of hours this evening and try and catch some more of the little beauties .
