Great Ouse | ||
|
I have been lurking around these forums for 3 years and have been trying to catch a barbel for as long. I caught my first barbel last night, just over 9 pounds from the Ouse. Wooohooo.

As Tommy Trinder used to say 'Yew Lacky People!'
What a fabulous river. Had a quick hour on the water last night, two swims, no bites, but very enjoyable all the same. I've never heard so many green woodpeckers - had to make sure my hat was on tight just in case... |

Jonboy
A tip when confronting some of our eastern european visitors who do claim not to understand English. They are not bothered by threats of calling the police, EA or Bailifs but the do pay attention when you mention the "Immigration Department" as they fear deportation more than anything. As for the traveller community they never stay long but they do have good communication links with other travellers. They do carry weapons where ever they go and the police are reluctant to attend. I have lost one car in that lay bye only to be found on the reservation in Wellingborough and the police threatened to arrest me if I went in tooled up to get my gear back. So just take their photograph and pass on to the police/immigration with vehicle details. David |

How did you get on last night trypwriter? I was on the road stretch at radwell last night.Amazed how few were out as the river was perfect.It had dropped a good few feet since sunday and starting to get that greeny tinge back(perfect).The horrible platforms were on show.I wanted to fish the same swim as sunday and the only other angler on the other bank was fishing about 20yds upstream.I gestered to him where i,d like to fish +he was fine about it as we wer,nt competing for the same swim(its, still near bank stuff with flow at moment).I put 2 rods out in same position as sunday +sat back.Matey on the other bank hooked first caught a nice one.Watching him photograph and weigh it I asked him how big it went.10lb 7oz he said and he.d had a similar one earlier.Then it was my turn.My left hand rod went and the clutch screamed. I tightened into it and tried to yank my other rod out but it stuck,so I had to leave it and hope,(bad practice).Anyhow after a really spirited scrap(made 3or4 really good runs)I landed a chunky fit double about the same size as matey,s opposite.Before returning it i yanked the other rod in and the terminal end looked a mess.Took the barbel to a a safe spot and after about 5 mins it,s tail kicked me goodbye(lovely).Got back to my swim and my other rod needed redoing, tangled badly at hook end and one of those unfathomable tangles round the beta-lite.Took me approx.25 mins to sort and get my bait,s back in river.How i wish i still had perfect vision. Matey on other bank left about eleven and i sat back with high expectations and waited and waited.One o clock decide to call it a night.While sitting there waiting I thought about the logistics of catching barbel of those platforms.It.s fine at the moment with river running high.Matey just played the fish back to end of platform.What are they gonna do when the river,s back to normal summer level and the barbel get there heads in the thick streamer.On the Vauxhall bank, like any other, you go up and down the bank playing it through the streamer and landing it wherever you can.On those platforms they are gonna be stuffed.If they try and walk off platforms with barbel attached the line will probably get caught in the reeds.Even if they manage to keep line out of reeds(unlikely) is the bloke on the next platform gonna oblige while they try and land it?I tell you what mate, whoever thought these platforms up I,d say face to face to him,you ain,t no barbel angler.Anyhow,enough ranting-hope you caught.All the best Harry.

Immigrants Fishing | ||

Jon,
It's a worrying state of affairs for sure. I would hope that if I were in a position where I was on my own and came across such a situation I would challenge aforementioned illegals. The probability is that, and I'm being brutally honest here, I probably wouldn't as I value my own safety, as well as my car/belongings/kit. I take your advice about taking pictures and phoning the bailiffs/EA etc on board. incidentally is your contact number in the book? On a lighter note, I happened across Paul on Saturday night fishing the top hole (sorry don't know his second name). Just wanted to say what a thoroughly nice bloke he seemed. Also I was glad to be asked for my club card. One of the posts above mentioned an otter. Also I have a good account of another sighting from, what I assume to be, Turvey. Can you confirm whether this is the case. Only interested because I've yet to see one in the wild. Also was wondering where it came from. Was it introduced recently? Looks like more rain for the weekend so conditions still looking good for a few more fish. Kind regards, Mark PS Great post Harry, and well done on the fish. |

Harry, I was the guy trying to talk to you from the roadside on my way back to the car - you hadn't caught by then but I'm glad to hear you landed one.

Otter | ||

Mark
Yes we do have them on that stretch and I have seen them a few times now. I am surprised you have not seen them you can normally hear them before you see them as they paddle up stream against the flow snorting water from it's nostrils. Possibly I spend too much time on the river that my odds of seeing one are greater. David |

Mark,
yes they are there as they were introduced to the river a few seasons back,they are in residence down towards the nature reserve near the gamekeepers cottage. I will pm you my moby, i did offer to put it in the club book but it was never taken up.If you need any of us then richard is your first point of call,i`m down there around 3 times a week but it`s sods law that i have never seen you.I won`t be fishing there a lot this season as i`m on another bit of the river but will have a dabble after work now and again so hope to catch up then. Dave, you are right that the travellers are tooled up so i would say to others be carefull but please report anything suspect as we need to keep on top of this.Thanks again for recomending me shauns services,i christened the new rod on opening night first cast ATB, John. |

They've been around for ten years or more. Until last March I hadn't seen one. Then in 4 sessions I've seen 4. Including Monday eve. Also saw, reed buntings and warblers, kingfishers, great terns, water vole, buzzards, sparrow hawks, barn owl, grey wagtail and on.
Nature's just great. |

Re: otter | ||

I did see plenty of otters last season but none in the close season or signs of any having been close by. I haven't seen any so far this season.
The river is dropping back and the colour is starting to go. Fished this afternoon and had another success, 14lb 13oz this time and in cracking order! Fantastic season for me so far, fishing hair rigged pellets. In the same session had 3 chub, the biggest was about 3lb........ Hope to get out again soon if the missus will let me! Tight lines to all. Adam |

Bloody-hell!
That's a good fish you must be chuffed to bits?!! Well done that man. Thanks also for all the posts wrt the otters. I'd heard of rumours, but nothing definite until this season. 5-6 seasons ago I was fishing the bottom field at Turvey and was frightened to death by what I thought was a dog barking right behind me. It was pitch black and I didn't turn around in case the "dog" took a disliking to me. After what seemed like forever, I heard it scamper away. In hindsight then this was probably an otter (they do bark don't they?). Alternatively it may have been a dog - I was told that sometimes the farmer lets his dog off the lead to have a run around the nature reserve at night (and before anybody jumps to the wrong conclusion I wasn't "guesting"). Kind regards, Mark |

Adam, 14lb 13oz is a good weight for a summer fish mate, well done. What will she weigh at the back end of the season??
Still haven't been able to find time to get out myself yet but at least I finally managed to put some new line on my reels yesterday. Mark. |

Re: otter | ||

Austin - could have been a badger - they can make dog like noises and have a surprising turn of speed as well.
Also, many thanks for the guys who have taken the time to have a natter with me on my first two visits to the river. Much appreciated. |

Hi trypewriter i cant get a message to you from my inbox so i, ll put it on here. So it was you i was chatting to the other night. You were in the right place. Where i was fishing ,all that bank is productive as is the first meadow on the other side of the road. If you want a bit more solitude just fish away from the car parking. You could go 3 miles either way of where we chatted and its all vauxhall and prime barbel water. Earlier you asked me as a newcommer to the river for any tips.I,d say pretty much fish it as you would any other river for barbel. Timing is very important, you wont catch any barbel in the boozer (lol) so get a starlight on the end of your rod. An hour before dark to 12.30 is prime time right now and well worth giving it that bit extra for. Another thing i do, despite not being fashionable nowadays is when the rivers in flood or high try some flavoured luncheon meat. It works for me. I,m off to jersey for the summer holiday sunday for a week so when i get back if you,v had a bend in your rod let us know.If you want maybe when i get back i,ll show you some swims off the beaten track. All the best HARRY.

Good result cobber1. Were you the guy I met yesterday as I was out for a walk along the bank and you were heading towards your swim?? We spoke about how few people had been fishing the stretch?
Cheers Mark. |

Hi Guys,
Been a member of the site for a while now but new to the barbel game...... have yet to cast a line into the Ouse ! I ahve joined Vauxhall and hope to get out when the missus is a bit better (rhumatoid arthritis). Live in Marston so not far from the Ouse, looking at the ticket the Radwell and surrounding areas are in sections..... can anyone tell me what sections would be best for a start ? Don't mind a long walk ! Any help would be most appreciated |
