Re: Great Ouse. Current levels | ||
|
Planning a 1st day trip to the Felmisham/Radwell area in morning just wondering if you have had much rain in the area and if it has effected levels as we have had very little in the area I live in london. Just want to know if I will need some heavy leads or not. Good luck to anybody on there this season.

..1st day | ||
|
Looks like Bedford is about to get another drenching. The river looks in good nick at the mo', few extra inches on and a splattering of colour. If we get more showers this evening then by tomorrow the levels could have risen some more.
Good luck to all, apart form those who have a shifty cast before midnight |

Well, i'm one blank closer to my next Barbel..
The river was up about 3-4ft this afternoon, not too much rubbish coming down.. At least the rain gave my tackle a wash! Declan |

Gents,
Just to update you all,the river has started to drop,it was about 5 foot above normal summer levels, water very coloured and plenty of flow on it...... The rubbish/weed still coming down but not as bad as it was on the early morn of the 16th. Having a cracking start to the season,followed up my two doubles on the 16th with another barbel this afternoon,not a double but still a decent fish 7lb 4 oz. The evening sky is very dark and black and may have some more rain tonight.Hoping to get out again this week,good luck to one and all. tight lines. Adam |

Good to be back | ||
|
Gents,
Was out on Saturday evening for a few hours. For me it was fantastic to actually see the river in the daylight for a change. The river still looked just as beautiful as I remembered it. Very surprised to see only a couple of other anglers on the stretch, considering the conditions and being the first Saturday of the season. I would have been on the bank 10 minutes earlier, if I hadn't taken the time to stop unpacking the car, and watch a barn owl quartering the meadows looking for its tea. On reaching the banks I found it a foot of so within its bank, with a fantastic colour and pace. Trying a few different places, first fish was a 9-10 oz roach (on hair rig!!). Second fish was my first barbel of the season pulling the scales around to 7lb 12oz. First cast in a different swim, and the bait only being in the water for less than 30 seconds - MAGICAL. The fish fought like a demon, punching well above its weight and didn't have a mark on her. Packed up at just gone midnight happy as Larry (a) not to have blanked, (b) to have caught a barbel and (c) witnessing and netting a double figure barbel for another angler. It doesn't get much better than that. Overall impression of the first weekend is that if fish were found, then multiple catches were to be had, whereas those not on the fish struggled for bites. Conditions were spot on, although the garage is now covered in wet and smelly kit, drying out after the rain. Regards, Mark |

Day 2 | ||
|
Having planned a 24 hour stint on the Severn from Midnight on 16th, we were flooded out by 10am having had two barbel. We were watching footballs (5), car tyres (5), beer kegs (3) and a mattress float passed our feet!
Anyhow it gave me a chance to have a gon on the Ouse on Sunday. Choccy brown and a nice pace. Managed an 11lb9oz and then a 7lb common carp which came as agreat surprise. May wonder down for another dabble this evening. Mike |

Re: Day 2 | ||

weathermen eh? it was meant to lash down this afternoon but 11-30pm and only showers in luton,still i suppose it could be lashing in bedford.hit 4 sunday night in the lashing rain and missed today frightened by the weatherman.tommorows meant to be o.k and if river don,t flood tonight i,ll have my hook between a pair of whiskas tomorrow night.I love high rivers in june.regarding carp, adams mill, down biddenham, bromham way you,r as likely to hit a carp as barbel mate. they are a nightmare at night,to big for whiskas gear.bromham weir section which was free for years( holds massive barbel) is now owned by a mainly carp syndicate. ---------anyhow good luck everyone.

Turvey. | ||

Gentlemen ( and ladies )
Any members of Northampton Nene AC kindly take note that on two occasions we have had three eastern european guys fishing on our water at turvey without a permit/license. On one occasion they were witnessed by a member catching a chub ( no landing net ) and dragging it up the bank. May i ask any members to be extra vigilant and if they spot these chaps to contact the head bailiff ( no in clubcard ) immediatley as i don`t need to tell you that we do not want any of our fish taken from our waters. They are currently driving a dark green v.w. which is unregistered. Your help in this matter is appreciated. John. |

lightning | ||
|
Managed an 8lb9oz fella last night following an hour sat 100 yards away from rods and brolly due to the lightning crashing around.
I saw one bloke land a six pounder in amongst all of this which I thought was a bit fool-hardy, but he said he'd seen worse. Fair play. It was I that chased off the 'foreigners' on Sunday from the wier pool. They were actually Irish, it was the gaelic that they were speaking that led me to believe they were eastern european when they walked past. Nonetheless, they were no better, dragging chub up the bank with no landing net between the three of them. No licenses and no club cards What really annoyed me was the apathy shown by the Rushden head bailiff when I rang him whilst only 50 yds from the offenders. He didn't give two hoots and basically told me to deal with it or just let it go. I told him in no uncertain terms how I felt about that. However, the Nene bailiff was my next call and he came straight away to help me move them on. Jon, please pass on my thanks to Richard. These guys weren't even on his strecth of water when he came to help and I did tell him that before he set off. I had seen them on the Nene stretch though earlier but couldn't say that I saw them wet a line. Rgds, Mike |

Re: letter of interest | ||

allright hunterash--i,ll keep this short as my fingers hurt mailing on subject(EA,Barbel society.H+safety,Verulam ,Vauxhall.Beds council+individuals)basically the stretch at radwell is shared by the 2 clubs,vauxhall having the fishable bank.to overcome the reed growth+soft bank on there bank Verulam have chopped through the reeds and erected 9 match type platforms enbedded in the gravel with concrete sleepers.all this in approx. 600 yd stretch.amazingly the E.A. have approved these.at the moment they are submerged but when the river drops it,ll ruin the stretch.when my son get,s home i,ll see if i can get him to transfer my origanal mail from my file to this site.if you want to contact the EA there is an e-mail adress on the VAUXHLL ANGLING CLUB website.all the best Harry

Harry, I'd heard about this. It's one reason I didn't get a Verulam ticket. Bought a Vauxhall one yesterday and plan to make my first visit to the river this evening.

Mike, Thanks for doing what you did as a lot of people would turn a blind eye,unfortunatly the other side of the bridge never gets checked by bailiffs hence when we kicked off a few chaps two seasons ago on our side they just went and fished the weir pool.
We have had the gypsies on our side prior to the start of the season so please report anything suspisious as myself,paul,and richard do not want anyone fishing the river if they have no regards for the fish that inhabit our great river there.I will pass on your thanks to richard. As a club we have suffered big losses elsewhere and we need everyone to keep vigilant for people who should not be there. Thanks again for your help,hope you have a good season. John. |
