I had a walk up at Howsham wood the other day and it looked terrific - until the canoeists started.

There is a perfect Barbel swim every 100 yards on the Derwent - however the Barbel disagree.
Read Jon Wolfe's accounts and realise there are very few if any "form" Barbel swims. In short it's tough cookie. -- Dr Barbus

-Dave Mason Barbel Catchers Club Book 1988 "The gravel runs and lush ranunculus growth at Howsham and Stamford, for instance, absolutley screamed Barbel, but the reality was that a hard slog was in store for anybody setting out in the hope of landing an elusive Derwent double" -Jon Wolfe Barbel Catchers Club Book 2004 These two quotes say it all really. I have particular affection for the river as I fished it as a youngster. I will be on the river this season hoping to get any size Barbel out, which I consider to be a major achievement. |

Fished last night 6-11,river at NSL +3ft,no sign of a fish.
I purposly fished a swim that would give me a good view of 200 plus yards of river and was dissapointed to not see any fish moving,even chub. After the consitant high levels of the last month,are the fish in the usual haunts or have they taken refuge? This year will be especially challenging on the derwent!! River dropped a foot over night so if we have no further rain,(ha,ha,ha) it could be OK for sat/sun. BOTD tawny owl justed missed my head,kingfisher fishing next to me,how do they see fish in this murky water? but hats off to a barn owl which hunted all evening feeding its chicks in a near by tree.Great entertainment whilst waiting for that elusive bite. |

I fished Howsham 20 years ago when I was nobbut a youngster and like everyone else was amazed it didn't have a bigger head of chub and barbel in the gravel runs between the streamer weed. That said I did only fish during daylight and never later than 4pm.
I did manage 1 barbel of 6lb (my first ever) and have lost 2 good fish off on other sessions ... and I was not very skillful at that time (or now  )....so they were there. I reckon with some prebaiting you can get amongst them on a more regular basis. The river is underfished and I reckon the barbel are very mobile, looking for food.

From past experience on this low stock density river, prebaiting has resulted in Chub frequenting the swims.

fished last night 6 to 11.30.One big eel on meat pellet rod never moved.
River looking close to NSL(if I can remember what normal was) good colour and looked good for barbel..........however as the Derwent does, it dissapointed. Try again,hope any other brave (mad??) souls are doing better. |

Fished today,2miles of river to myself on a Sunday!!
River NSL still carrying colour, water and air temp dropped dramactically pm.Yet again Barbel did not show. This really is a great looking river and Its a shame my fellow anglers have deserted it. As they say 'use it or loose it'. |

She is as far removed from the commercial fishery concept of a guaranteed catch as you will find. And much prettier too.
However, in the last few years, Hull&DAA have given up Newton and Low Catton, and Leeds ASA Stamford Above. Both are now closed to fishing - shame really given the history of those two stretches. |

I did contact the farmer who owns the field above Stamford Bridge last season regarding the fishing rights but he just wasn't interested. He probably makes enough money from the riding school. Stussy - putting the fashion back into fishing.

enjoyed a very peaceful session tonight 6-11.
Convinced I would get a fish,river NSL and good colour pulling hard.No Barbus but a beautiful Chub around 4 1/2 pound. Next Time ? |

I am searching very very hard and finding location this year very difficult. I have yet to see a Barbel roll or tell tales of feeding fish,which of course is always difficult on this river. A leaping fish would give great encouragement,plenty of Chub about and large Roach I have seen rising are becoming more attractive. Hopefully,at the end of the week, commitments will allow a good session and a welcome fish.. Hope you catch rate is better than mine. Ken. |

Fished today 3 till 10pm.
Shared the river with chub and otter no barbel. Enjoyed the long walk,but there are so many swims to choose from. River becoming clearer each day but still with a good flow. |
