Maggots - Freezing? |
Lead | |
|
Any advice on freezing maggots? I often find that I have a few pints left after a session and I'm thinking of freezing a few for when I fish silty areas
for other species. Is there anything I need to know beforehand or do I simply stick them in a sealed bag in the freezer?
Thanks, Paul |

vac pac them if possible, if not, squeeze as much air as possible out of the bag.... strange thing is... they don't always die , many's a time they
thawed out and started wriggling again...... cryogenics baby!!!!!

Easy to do - Just make sure they are dry before freezing.

PJ, just bag them up squeeze the air out place in fridge not freezer because they lose they colour & stretch, the longer in the bag it takes them longer to
come round, ie 1 hr sealed means 2hrs for any movement!

yes i know that davhall but if pj keeps them like that say for 3 or 4 days before he uses them it will take to long for them to come round, the other way of
doing it is to pour boiling hot water on them leave until stop moving then drain place in cold water for few seconds to cool off , will not lose colour or
stetch samething

Thanks for the advice. I do indeed want them dead as I don't want them burrowing into the silt and hiding away. I've used frozen maggots before but
have always bought them rrather than do it myself. The ideas about flavouring them is a good one, so thanks for that tip.
I'm a little confused about the boiling water though. Are you saying I should scold them in boiling water to kill them instantly and then freeze them after I've dried them off to ensure they are dead? Thanks, Paul |

They are also a good winter bait for barbel.
Steve stayner writes about using them in his books and I know an angler who has had several fish on dead maggots on the Derwent. Cahal |

PJ, boiling them will kill them straight away, but you must place in cold water to stop going hard like a bullet
you can try a test batch say a handful in a bag in the fridge & handful in a bag in the freezer after boiling them to see if the colour has dropped out or stretch than you see what works best for you |
