There have been unconfirmed reports of barbel appearing in the river exe and culm, just wondering if anyone on here has heard anything or knows anything. They have never been stocked and I heard a rumour of a couple of big fish being caught.

There was definately a 9lber reported from the Exe last season (was in one of the weeklies). Seem to remember Brian Gay saying that there are Barbel in the Culm near the confluence with the Exe in a where to fish in Anglers Mail.
Sorry I don't know any more........ Cheers Paul M........ |

There's fairly consistant reports of small numbers of fish caught from the Exe, usually accidental captures by carp anglers but I've not heard of any from the Culm, despite being assured that they are in there. I've walked a number of sections of both rivers in the last two years but so far have seen no sign of any barbel. Apparently the fish in the Culm got into the river when a stillwater containing barbel flooded a few winters ago and the ones in the Exe are a mixture of this stock and some that arrived via the M5!
I had a chat last year with someone who posts on this site and he said that he had been trying to catch a barbel locally by design but had no luck and now fishes the Warwickshire Avon, which wasn't what I wanted to hear as I moved to S. Devon from Coventry three years ago. I'll keep searching and if I get any joy I'll post the news. |

A small barbel of around 9 inches was weighed in on an Exeter and District Angling match on the tidal Exe during September (none of that size were introduced)
also at least one of @ 8lbs from Trews Weir (unfortunately in private hands)
Environment Agency not too keen on stocking with barbel officially on the grounds that the Exe is predominantly a trout and salmon river, and are not natural to the area. The same arguement was used initially on the Wye. How about a concerted effort to get the EA to stock. |
