Re:seal in the river don
|
i have been on the don today,
still dark and i arrive to find the don a good 4 foot up, got to the peg i wanted and look around, uuuummmm there's a big log been washed up, suddenly splash! log jumps into the river i @#%$ myself and nearly fall in after it what the hell is that i think to my self, well shouted acctualy, then it pops its head up and decides to swim around in MY peg, so what to do, i watched for a few minuets and it didnt take any fish, there were no remains around so i decided to tackel up anyway after throwing it a stick, not directly at it of course, just to see if it swam off. O MY GOD, i now had a seal thinking it was performing at flamingo land, the flaming thing started to roll around and play with it anyway as i tackel up it swam away. so time passed and aide poped down, while he was there IT POPED BACK UP AGEN, this time i managed to get it to come rearly close, so close infact i could have nearly touched it, tempted with the barbels luncheon meat but i think he would have sooer had a fish lol. just thought i would let you all know, what should i do??? do i report it to any1 or just hope it swims back to see??? |

Re: Re:seal in the river don

was the seal in tidal or nontidal water?,im from cleveland so i dont know the area, wondered because the tees gets loads of seals below the tees barage in the tide, the seals usually come in to the river to catch salmon and other large fish, they prefer salmon to course fish though, hope they are targeting salmon would be nice to see the Don with Salmon runs once again

Re: Re:seal in the river don

it was none tidle mate, well i say that, it may get a very small rise on a big tide but not that you would notice, and salmon have been seen running the don last couple of season. the ea did a survay in the summer and got a 12lb salmon out

Re: Re:seal in the river don

sorry i meant was they any weirs between the tide and where it was seen? cos seals very rarely comeinto freshwater esp if they have some sort of obstruction,we had one in the tees at Stockton on tees a year or two ago,the none tidal bit
Its good to see Salmon makeing a return again to the don,september-october time will be a good month to see don Salmon encountering weirs and dams etc.... also if yer fish up the river dons higher reaches check out becks and feeder streams around october to december time, even the one that are only a few feet wide, look for deeper wider sections of becks and trickles, look for gravely parts of the water and also check out deep holes with the aid of polaroids, for spawned Salmon and Sea Trout-DONT KILL these fish its ilegal to once they spawned anyway they would taste like s@@t plus theys the fact that they might just make it back down to see and return again! also dont remove dead fish again an offence under the salmon and freshwater fisheries act 1975 pluse the ones that die after spawning only add beneficial nutrients to the water which helps smaller fish and offspring High water is best for salmon when in flood not to big of a flood though, they will run right tight to the bank, idealy yer want a section of water that goes from a raipdy type to a glide just above the rapid, when the water is high sit and look at these areas look for fish puching through creating a bow wave from the tail, like i say the fish maybe tucked right up to the river bank, also spring fish maybe on the cards for the don,yer see cold water holds more oxygen than warmer water,so this might be enough to get them through the estuary or areas of poorer water quality-good luck to the Don and its Salmon |
