Have just bropught a Stockport Fed card (too cheap not to) and live a stones throw from the river. Barbel, apparently so according to some reports so worth a cast. Does anyone know anything about the place or plan to give it a go?

Had them out of the lower reaches of the Goyt up to 3 or 4lb but have heard of much better fish coming out here and there. Not sure how widespread they are but they are certainly up as far as the weir at Otterspool which is fishable on your Fed card.

Damo, have you found any yet?
I've been fishing the Goyt for 3 seasons now, mainly around the Marple area, and still no sniff of a barbel: I've had everything else but! So, if you (or anyone else out there) do find them I'd really appreciate some pointers, it's becoming personal Any help gratefully received! Gregsy |

Well done, i'm hoping for a bit more rain to freshen things up a bit, but its great to be able to catch Barbel on a once poulluted river.

Re: River Goyt | ||

Too true, it's a special satisfaction catching on the Goyt - I've had some wonderful fish out: grayling to 2lb, trout to 5.03 (and seen bigger ones), fairly regular chub to over 5lb, the odd decent roach, some perch and I've seen pike though never caught one there. And to think that not long ago the river used to run different colours every day depending on what the dye-works were producing... Apparently the trout won't be safe to eat for another 50 years though, due to all the heavy metal poisoning that's been suffered - but the streamer weed is coming back. And the salmon are returning: Amazing!

Re: River Goyt | ||

brabyns has allegedly done 2 good fish this year - but nobody's seen a photo. I fish down that way a lot, and none of the regulars have ever caught a barb down there although the dome weir always looks promising. The other part of the river, that rarely gets fished but looks really promising, is the section around the canoe club in Marple - has anyone been down there?
by the way, went on Friday with my mate toward Stockport, he caught one at about 5-6lb (we put it straight back, it was a long fight) and I had the hook pull at the net on one which looked bigger. |

Hi folks,
Not fished the Goyt for Barbel yet, I've heard the rumours of decent fish coming out and I know that the EA (or whatever they were called back then) stocked Barbel into the River Etherow around ten years ago. I watched another angler catch a few mini barbs on the stick around that time, and little Barbel grow into big Barbel eventually. gregsypike, I fished opposite the canoe club quite a few years back after a tip off from a mate about some nice chub - failed miserably for the chub but caught a cracking brownie (just over 4Lb) on ledgered flake. The river looks promising for barbel there but it's a bit of a struggle to get down to the bedrock on the opposite side to the canoe club. Good luck if you try there. |

Has anyone been on the Goyt this week? Any news on how it's fishing? I'm hoping to get a couple of hours on Sunday evening ...

Hi All
I've been trying several different stretches of the Goyt for a couple of seasons now around the Stockport/Marple area and the Barbel are there alright. I've had fish to 8lb but I suspect bigger one must be there though Brabahms has just produced masses of game fish for me. I've found the Barbel at Oterspool and around the Pear mill stretch along with a healthy head of Chub, Perch, some Roach and I'm told some pretty big Pike inhabit those stretches but I've not seen any sign. I'm gonna have a go at finding those Pike this winter. |

Good luck Exile, I intend to do a bit of Esox-hunting myself as it gets colder. I know they're there, and nobody seems to fish for them much.
Had 4 Barbs to 7.12 on Sunday, missed 2 massive bites (how, I don't know) and lost 2 as well - all in a 4-hour session. Roll on weekend. |

Re: River Goyt | ||

NICE catches
Went Tuesday night and got nibbled at all night but they just weren't confident bites I hear the pool below paintmaster where the fast water slows holds some very big pike, 20+ is the word from 2 different people I have spoken to. Could be worth a look |
