I'm wondering about fish sensitivity to rig resistance on an initial or tentative take.
I have had a lot of bites lately where a reasonable initial single pluck has not developed, and reeling in has revealed a bare hair in place of the large chunk of spam which was close enough to the hook for removal of bait to be difficult without taking the hook.
So I figure that the fish, whatever it is, is mouthing the bait, feeling resistance, and sinking back in the current with the bait until it comes off.
In your experience, is there a particular set-up which minimises fish spooking for whatever reason?
I know from sea fishing that a pulley rig halves the rod tip resistance through the mechanics of its construction. Is there a freshwater equivalent?
Indeed, would the style of take above indicate barbel, or is it smart chub?
