One of those really good natural baits that will catch fish anywhere, possibly the most potent attractor going, even on a par with pellets! Its only downside is that every species loves it, if you want to avoid bream this is deffinately not the answer. If you can sight fish a really good freelining/trotting bait, caught a lot of barbel using it, and if your lucky enough to have a virgin/unfished bit of river, first choice for me everytime!

Is it waste of time using corn in chocolate coloured waters? Or is it best to stick with a really smelly meaty bait?

So many books and articles from 15 years ago to today have told barbel anglers not to use corn as it spooks fish. Any bait overused will spook fish, just like pellets have started to on some rivers.
I'm positive some barbel have never ever seen corn, and they don't spook from it on my local stretch as I have seen tucking in to it. Advantage is that it's cheap and you can buy it just about anywhere. Disadvantage is that all fish seem to like it. To avoid all the small fish destroying the bait you could use imitation baits. I have no confidence in artificials though. As for coloured water, sweetcorn is a smelly bait in my mind and it is very visual. Just make sure you don't drain all the juice out of it when you decant from the tin. I used to make that mistake and I am certain I now catch more. After handling 'wet' corn - smell your hands and then say it isn't smelly! Andy |

i use the artificial corn as the hookbait...very very effective
regarding sweetcorn not being a selective bait, i would suggest that sweetcorn is in no way a less selective bait than pellets boilies pastes maggots or castors etc etc, (had a few nice Roach last season on ledgered 16mm boiliee to a size6 hook) all fish are opportunist, should an opportunity to feed present itself then the bait will be taken regardless of the actual offering and by a multitude of species, no doubt whatsoever in my mind, that a Barbel only bait resides only within the realms of fantasy |

I certainly still find sweetcorn to be a good barbel bait. There's no bream where I fish, so don't get the problem. Ok still a few chub troubles, but generally, get the barbel searching for it and you're laughing.
I have a secret presentation method, but I'm not giving that away just yet |

Thanks Lads
Some great replys and i will be giving it a good go and i it will make a good change bait. As for chub bites you seem to get them what ever bait you use,if your set up is right you just leave them alone. Tight Lines and Happy Barbel Fishing. Nigel |

it's certainly worth adding the flavour into a method mix, some loose grains, the juice from the tin and the rest pureed in the blender. it's got a great aroma. I'm trying to use it a little as a hookbait this season, no success yet but I think it's got bags of attraction potential.
