I try and use freezer baits as much as possible as i believe they are better, however this year space in my freezer is very limited. Can anyone explain how to air dry baits and in particular what the point of air drying them is?
Cheers

Air drying removes all the moisture from the bait and you can keep them for months like this.
when ready to use them rehydrate them with a liquid flavor or additive, the baits soak it up and leak it off when fished,or you can rehydrate with river water to soften them. you'll need some air drying bags or some bags made of netting to allow the air to circulate(or place them in a landing net) and give them a shake everyday for the first week to rotate the baits. Air drying is a superb way to treat baits and being able to rehydrate them with flavors is a big bonus. |

Thanks for the quick reply. Presumably the baits once dried are rock hard, can they be used as hook baits in this state or do you have to rehydrate them? Cheers Simon |

simon,
yes you can use them mate, just drill them out like a pellet, infact if you have a problem with crayfish or small fish then this stops them nibbling them. |

once put in a liquid an air dried bait will absorb it like a sponge if you want soft high attract baits then air dry them and then put them in a liquid.

Thanks for the replies guys.
You mention rehydrate them with liquids, presumably i could use oils as well? As Columbo would say, just one more thing, is it worth using frozen bolies for this or would self life be just as good. I prefer frozen as they have no preservative. Cheers Simon |

I air dry frozen all the time, you air dry fresh or frozen to preserve them,no point doing it to shelflife.

Also possible to dry boilies by storing them amongst a large quantity of pellet (suggesting 10:1 pellet to boilie ratio). This causes the boilies to take up some of the oils / aroma of the pellets used.
Particularly recommend air drying in air(!) first, then storing air dried baits by mixing in with pellets. THis keeps them rock hard. Rehydration in Hemp water works for me. For a suitable drying recepticle - unless you have space for drying trays, I recommend scouring the magazine racks for baby and preganancy magazines - they frequently have a free mesh 'buggy bag' that's perfect for the job - think there's one in circulation at the moment. But any mesh bag will do really. Just regularly move the baits and don't overfill to ensure you dry evenly without mould forming. Suggest 500g per bag max at a time for 4-5 days minimum, then into the pellet. |
