I've been thinking about this today Stu, what do you think the implications are of carrying/storing one in your motor with regards the police and offensive weapons?

Ok so we could hide a machete on us, but what if you got pulled over with one in the car.....any policemen on the boards? where is Dave Burr when you need him |

Rob
I hadn't thought about the offensive aspect - I sometime carry a Scythe for the more adventurous sections of some rivers - where the bank is 6 feet tall bank of nettles. -- Dr Barbus

rob gives a valid point here.we all know the rascal can get away with it but the unsuspecting angler would be booked for having offensive weapons.back in the 70s i fished a pit that was overrun with rats so i took my airsporter and reduced the population.one afternoon having baited and shot 3 of them i went back to the car and there was the jam butty police unit.they arrested me because somebody had spied and reported me.as some airgun buffs will know this model of airsporter had a muzzle with a .22 end of barrel.the dim wit bobby would not accept the situation and it was for ages before i was allowed to go.get a 4inch cutter to screw on the end of the landing net handle.

...better off trying to leave it all undisturbed lest anybody realises the potential
i carry a large Machete in the rod bag, only really gets used in jungle swims so that i can manouver the landing net uninhibited, |

I will use a small scythe and I have one of those blade attachments for the end of the backsticks.. Where I fish it is deep nettle country, They are invaluble, As far as the legality of using one is concerned all blade articles are illegal in public places
Section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 as amended by section 42 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 created an offence of possession of a bladed or pointed article in a public place. However.. It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had good reason or lawful authority for having an article with him in a public place . It shall also be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had the article with him - (a) for use at work; (b) for religious reasons; OR (c) as part of any national costume. 'Blade' means the sharp blade of a knife, sword, etc. It is not intended to include the blunt blade of a screwdriver, oar, cricket bat or other item, which common sense tells us was not intended to be covered by this section; R v Davies 1998 CrimLR 564. 'Public Place' includes any place to which the public have or are permitted access, whether on payment or otherwise. However, its down to what you intend to use the item for, If you intend to cut back bankside vegetation fine no problem, however if you intend to injure the angler whose nicked your prebaited swim... well thats a different matter ! That should keep you all chewing the fat for a while. andy |

I agree young les about leaving the undergrowth alone....secret squirrel an all that, but my thoughts are on the Teme and those untouched swims are a nightmare to get to , let alone fish

Re: overgrown swims | ||

as i said , its only going to be visible when its actually needed , i mean how many coppers are actually going to go through your gear looking for an offensive weapon ? none
to a certain extent i suppose a bank stick could be classed as dangerous ? and if it is seen by joe public when in use & plod arrives , surely common sense will prevail |

Ive used a machete on the teme and parts of the lower severn for a while now after having a nasty fall on some himalayan balsam a few years back. Nicely tucked away in the rod bag, no one would know its there.

I use a machete and its usually in my fishing truck, there's no problem with that as I am responsible for the upkeep of a fishery and have to open swims and keep the dreaded hogweed etc at bay.
However, if I strap it to my belt and wander in to the pub it opens a whole new can of worms. If you are allowed to clear the banks (and not all clubs/syndicates allow this) then take one with you but if you carry it as a matter of course (and there have been posts on BFW about self-protection in the past) then it is open to interpretation. I've just bought a good old fashioned slasher, a curved blade on a long pole, trust me, it is ten time better than a machete for clearing weeds. If you do want a machete they are available in are surplus stores for about a tenner. As for firearms including air guns, you can only use them on a persons property if you have their express permission, popping rats ain't a good enough excuse to carry one. If you want to clear some bank to fish a new bit a better way is to walk down the bank using short steps using your landing net handle to feel your way through the undergrowth for hidden dips etc. As you walk push the undergrowth to the sides with your feet, it opens up a path that can continue to grow when you leave thus covering your tracks and causing minimum disturbance. |
