The reason I ask is that a club I`m in wants to get a stretch of the Middle Severn so I thought I`d ask around to see if theres anywhere available. I do know of one possibility but want a bit more of a definite conformation than asking in the local pub! Can anyone help? By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.-(Apologies to Confucius!)

A seldom fished free Surrey venue, which held (still does) some fine Barbel in the early 80's. The few of us who fished it had a few seasons of great sport, until one of our mates told a certain "Angling journalist/school teacher/egotist/T@sser" about it as a favour. Two weeks later it was featured as a 2 page spread in the Angler's Shmail and hammered relentlessly henceforth. I t might be back to something like it's past quality thesdays however, as a local Angling Society posted their "Private Fishing" signs along the stretch, which they don't actually control. A bit cheeky, but probaly the best thing that could have happened for the venue, in the circumstances. As appparent on the Wandle thread, not to mention Richmond Councils outrageous "no fishing" signs on public free fisheries, thes things are not always quite as they appear.

I thought at the time that if I lived down there I would fish the river in waders and let the buggers try and stop me. Bill
