Posts: 1155 (07/04/07 09:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I have just been reading an article on the closed season and was wondering what you all feel towards it,i'd keep it as it is to be honest. ----------------------------------------------------------- The current closed season for river course fishing will be scrapped unless scientists can prove it is needed to protect stocks. That is the call from the National Federation of Anglers. At the moment anglers must stop fishing flowing water after March 14,and can only start again on June 16, although the closed season on canals or lakes has been lifted. NFA chief Paul Baggaley fumed: " All other waters users are now taking advantage of rivers but not anglers that pay to use them. The closed season was introduced to keep ordinary working people off rivers at the height of the salmon season. But scientists tell us there is no evidence supporting the need for a closed season". ----------------------------------------------------------- I know we have been through this before but what would your thoughts be on a 12 month river season. Unelected (by the likes of US) officers of Angling acronyms, eh? F.A. for the people I know and fish with means summat else entirely. We have a close season for coarse fish in rivers. We have a very closely guarded close season for salmon, sea-trout and trout in rivers (hell would have to freeze over before it went). We should keep them both and not let the Hard of Thinking mess things up any more than they have done in the past. "Some people drink of the Waters of the Fountain of Knowledge. It would have been better to leave it alone in the first place and go back to the good old days all Waters Closed. But that all in the past. Or rather, mellowed somewhat! I never had a problem when it was a 'blanket' close season. ...And I personally still don't have a problem with rivers being off limits now. What DOES bother me with the present scenario is, I see far too many anglers on lakes and pools fishing for species like carp and tench, when it is blatantly obvious that these fish are spawning! They will move into obvious spawning areas, on mass, in the quiet, shallower corners of the lakes and cast their lines amounst spawning fish. Resulting in MANY foul hooked fish! As for river species, as we know, they too spawn at different times throughout the year and often more than once. They can be clearly seen and targeted by anglers of the same low ethical ilk as those I see on lakes and pools now. So what's my problem? I fear we cannot stop this happening on rivers, whatever form of 'close season' is implemented! And let me stress again...these fish can and do spawn more than once a year. But, if the rivers were to remain open all year? Would this, in effect, not at least 'spread the load' on this happening? $:\$ I know it's kind of 'reverse' thinking! But, as I said, we are NEVER going to fully stop this from happening anyway? I feel the problem is Not with the present close season or indeed the old system...and Never has been...the problem is with these type of anglers...and how will anything EVER stop that happening? Dunna jump on me back! I know there is more to the close season than just spawning fish...and as I said, I'd be 'happier' if we went back to a blanket ban. Regards Dazza.

I fear the 'peak' of angling's popularity during the year would therefore be at the same time as the fish spawn. I say keep the close season, we need to taste reality now and then!!

Posts: 4003 (07/04/07 13:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	when i put the a pole up a little while ago,i went on the stage of thought that would keep it on all waters,but now i have changed my mind.why..well because it is, on the whole uninforceable and i see NO reason why it should it be kept. it should ultimley be down to club's,landowners to make the decsion just like we have now on still waters and canals. dave.

I have never witnessed this during the old close season nor have I witnessed it in June July and August when Carp and Tench spawn. Let's have a proper discission not one based on flawed 'what if's' and 'I once heard a story down the pub' type nonsense.

I dont agree with this, as rivers are the basis of our country's aquatic environments. People don't own the fish in the water, unlike in a lake. Wild fish are exactly that- nobody's property and should not be treated as such.

Posts: 8599 (07/04/07 22:51) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	in my opinion this is no different from when still waters was continually harassed with same thing but they also utilised trout as a way of getting round it, a few of the big fisheries did, its all commercial pressure, disguised in many ways but its commercial orientated, lets face it most married guys have probably organised their annual household chores around the close season, sorting out the garden, bit of decorating,ect ect the only real gain is by the commercial trade, ie tackle manufacturers, bait suppliers, fisheries,tackle shops ect ect, what do they gain by it?.................stabilised trade, orders, ticket sales,supplies and so on and most of all regular cash flow, the banks and the bankside residents and visitors could do with a few weeks peace and quiet, it aint only fish that breed during this period, waterfowl, animals ect and plantlife both in and out of the water.....j.w

Not being funny guys but not every 1 fishes for barbel they arent the be all and end all of fish, if there was a disease like the perch 1 would you all hang up your rods and never fish again? Somehow i doubt it, i think theres a bit of barbel snobbery/superiortiy going on here don't get me wrong i love to fish for barbel {when i can catch them} open any of the angling weeklies letter pages and every 1 seems to think it daft having a river close season but look on this site the majority say keep as it is wheres the continuity? Hands up how many of you go still water fishing in the close who say keep the rivers shut? Bet theres a few of you hypercrtical isnt it? Any ways thats my rant over at the end of the day im a angler who likes to catch fish, and for 3 months of the year i cant fish the venues i prefer not like i can trot a stick float on butterly resevoir for the roach is it?

An individuals position on the need for a close season or not is going to depend on what they see as the reason for having it in the first place. Lets break it down; "We have a close season to protect spawning fish." This is a valid arguement when considering dace, roach, perch and pike (who spawn in march/april) but what about carp, tench, chub and barbel? June 16th will see many anglers targeting tench full of spawn. June 16th will see many anglers trying in vein to catch the barbel which are still spawning on the gravel shallows. Last summer barbel were still spawning on the Ouse come the second week of the season. Carp were spawning on my local pit on July 3rd last year. If therefore the close season is there to help protect spawning fish it should run from March 14th- July 23rd. Or maybe even August 1st this would ensure no spawning fish are targeted. Still want a closed season based on the fact it protects spawning fish? ---------------------------------------------------- "We have a closed season to let the riverside birds nest, and to give the rivers and its banks a well deserved rest." Tell that to the plague of dog @#%$ leaving dog walkers out and about yesterday. Especially to the one I witnessed who let his jack Rusell chase off either a moorhen or a coot, so as the dog could have a good munch on the eggs in the nest, I kid you not I saw this day before yesterday. Or to the local canoe club pracxtising in a weirpool yesterday. Or to all the weekend admirals taking aboard their vessels for the easter weekend. SO, us anglers should stay away from the rivers for 3 months because we will be giving it a well deserved rest? hmm ------------------------------------------------------ "We have a closed season to keep the working rabble off of the banks during the best time so for targeting Salmon." Erm, only recently read that arguement in one of the comics so havnt got a suitable sarcastic er I mean factual response for that one. -----------------------------------------------------

Posts: 1725 (08/04/07 13:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi,you just said it markp,when you can catch them,and thats the challenge. the one species of fish that that makes me think about methods,location,and bait,and most of all there fighting qualities,that no other species have done.ive caught big fish of other species over the years,but if i had a choice of going back to catching big carp,or tench,roach,or blanking for big barbel,i would honestly prefur the blanks,on my favourite river. it may not be every ones cup of tea,but it is certainly mine,and yes its an obsession,and i love it.cheers derek.
